Taking my horse on a long journey and by herself she sweats up to the point where she is soaking wet.
I have been advised by my vet to give sedalin which he has perscibed me.
But how much to give...

The leaflet says for a 450kg horse (which is what mine weighs) to give 2ml for sedation, then it continues to say if you want very slight sedation you can half it, and for a deeper sedation you can give 1 1/2 the required amount...which would be 5ml...anymore than that and the sedation wouldn't be any deeper but would just last longer.

So what would you give a horse this size for travel bearing in mind they have to be arert enough to travel....on leaflet it does say suitable for travel so am guessing even with the highest dose that it is not that deep?

She has had IV sedation for x-rays in the past, so thats the only thing I can really compare it to.

I would be calling the vet and asking him. They should tell you exactly how to use it and it what situations. Some horses don't take to sedalin so would need a lot more than is in the instructions and others will only need a fifth of what it says.

Please ask your vet and let them make the decision. I would be very wary about sedating for travelling, plus if she has never had it before, her reactions to it might make her worse.

agree with LP- call your vet.

My horse is an absolute nightmare and VERY dangerous to clip (legs come out at all angles and she swings into you)

I give her 3ml for clipping, she is 15.3 ID/TB - i would never DARE give her any more as with 3ml her head is on the floor and she is not that stable on her feet!

Horses will all react differently- so check with your vet and good luck. (maybe use something not so hardcore- like Oxishot?)
 
I would definitely ask the vet for more advice. I have used it on 2 ponies (not for travelling), similar build, one 13hh and one 13.2hh so not a humungous difference in bodyweight. The 13hh conked out on 1ml but the 13.2hh was still well and truly firing on all cylinders after having 5ml :o (Vet who she pinned up against the wall in the stable could confirm that :o :o )
 
Have spoken to my vet and he says give her the suggested amount... but without knowing what the standard dopiness is for the 2ml dose I dont know how much to give.
So was wondering how other peoples horses reacted on the standard dose for their weight? and if it was very dopey I would only give half recomended.
 
Hard to advise on this, really should be for the vet.
Have used 2ml on our horse and that was enough to make him just slightly sleepy for an hour but he is a big lad, 16'3.

I have also been told to take any feed away from them in case they choke when eating.
 
when are you travelling her? have you time to practice? In all fairness I am not sure why the vet is giving you sedalin for her to travel as I very much doubt it will help. Did they tell you that sedalin can also have the reverse affect? For example, if the horse manages to come out of the sedation or fight it, all senses are then heightened, which is why they don't recommend it or ACP on fireworks night.

My old horse was overdosed by some dosey cow on my yard, she gave him 2 tubes of it!! He was taking apart his stable with his back feet, so she kept pumping it into him, if anything it made him worse. Vet came out and said he was fine and that when the others came in (he was on box rest after surgery) he would sleep like a baby. I.e. when the stress was taken away, his body would allow the sedation to work, he was still dopey the following day!

1.5 times 2 = 3 NOT 5!!!! :D Just so's you don't end up with a horse that appears to be in a state of hibernation for the next X months!! :)
 
I would trial run, you will see how dopey she is. I have my chunky 13.2 3ml as recommended by vet for shoeing. His head was on the floor. He was still very dopey on 2ml the next time and we ended up just using 1ml.
