Hi all

Im planning on clipping my mare on Sunday and im going to try and sedate her with sedalin.
I have tried getting her used to the clippers and this is making her worse.

Question is, how long before I start to clip should I give it to her and how much per body weight, I can 'estimate' her weight with my measuring tape

Thanks

I used 3 turns on a MW full up 14.2 native last Sat.
Vet said 40 mins was best time, but friend was delayed so arrived an hour after I had put it in. However, usually v stressy (with clippers) fuzzy was as good as gold to do for the next 20 mins doing a chaser clip & toddled cheerfully enough out to field after.

If in doubt, check with your vet for dosage, remember to give it while fuzzy is quiet - and to keep things quiet around them - any stress can make them react MORE than usual if it has not yet taken effect, on occasions.

I know plenty of people who use sedalin and swear by it but for me it wasn't really an option as my mare sweats heavily when sedated. I also personally hate sedating them when they don't like something as to me I hate the thought of her still being unhappy but being unable to physically do anything about it. ** This is not a pop at anyone who uses dope - just how I personally feel**
With this is mind I bought a copy of a clipping DVD that Michael Peace did and using this I was able to clip my girl on only the second day of using the methods and in fairness could probably could have done it on day 1 had I not been losing light.

My girl is very extreme and strikes with her front feet so I honestly would recommend this DVD to anyone who would like an alternative to dope. Don't get me wrong safety has to be the most important factor and for that reason she has to be intravenously injected for things like the dentist for everyone's sake including hers. With clipping though I just wanted to try and see if I could get her to accept it and trust me so that we could do it with everyone aware.

Not suggesting for 1 minute that you are wrong to use it - just wanted to suggest another idea. Good luck with her anyway x

It give my full up 17.1hh tb who is built like a warm blood 5 turns when he went out after box rest- it was too much for him he was completely gone so much so when a can exploded 5 metres from him on a fire he didn't flinch.
I think its approx 1 turn for each 100i weight if Im remembering correctly.
Make sure its given when horse is quiet and not expecting anything to happen otherwise the effect of sedative won't happen. My old boy used to have 7 acp but still need twitching for some areas.

If the horse is sedated it shouldn't be unhappy, or even want to bother trying to kill you when you bring clippers near it. I'm all for sedation if you're clipping something that could harm you or itself. I have one that needs sedating. We usually have to vet to do this and i would recommend asking your vet for the dosage for sedalin.

Be very careful about the dosage - If I gave my 17.1 Shire/TB the recommended dose for his weight, he would be out like a light. It only takes 3 notches for him to be comatose! I'd recommend starting at a low level if your horse hasn't had it before.

my 11hh pony took half a tube without wavering! second time of dosing we got the necessary dose in to him and he was at his quietest 1.5 hours after the dose

That was for the farrier not clipping

He is ok now thank goodness as he definitely did not like the taste and I think I would have trouble getting him to accept it next time round!

I guess that depends on whether you believe that sedation in horses puts them in a warm happy place of peace and love or whether it is more like a Date rape drug where the mind is still active and alert but the flight response is disabled??

Date rape drugs do not work like that, hence the fact that the victims cannot often remember what happened to them, I think you are thinking of some of the paralytics, which are much rarer.

I hope it works for you, but it didn't on my mare. It calmed her a bit, then she would stress and barge again if we changed sides or location and we still couldn't get anywhere near her head or between her front legs without the fight of our lives. I get the vet to sedate her now - much less stressful for everyone involved.

We once tried to clip my pony. He wouldn't let us near him without a twitch then after clipping one side (we just wanted hair off in sweaty places) he kicked out with front feet without any notice. We couldn't continue so left him for 2 days to get the vet to sedate. He gave as much as he could but pony was still aware. We managed to tidy up the clip but the pony was not happy at all. It took 4 hours for him to come around after so much sedation. We even tried tying him up beside ones who were good to clip. I spent a year trying to de-sensitise him with hand held massagers and small trimmers. No go.
We do not clip him anymore!

Thanks for all your replies.

I actually have the vet out today so going to ask for the recommended dosage for her.

Fingers crossed this works!

I also have some ear plugs for her, as it is the noise that she doesnt like.
