she also sweats a bit so thought this year would try sedating her to try and make it a bit less stressful for everyone but will it actually make a difference because dont want to get the vet out etc if its not going to make that much difference thanks

You cant get sedative from tack shops- it has to be via the vet, whether it be ACP/sedalin which you give the horse (works on some horses, not all) or if youre prepared to pay, IV sedative by the vet

Get ACP/Sedalin and give at least 1/2 hr before you start that way adrenaline won't have started to go round the system and the sedative should work. 1 ACP tablet is enough to send my horse to sleep/knock edge off him. If you explain why you need it vet is normally happy to help and it doesn't cost that much.

My ticklish gelding had to have 15 tablets of ACP! For best results give 1 1/2 - 2 hours before clipping and horse will need complete peace and quiet for drug to take full effect. You can only obtain the drug from your vet.

ACP can wear off quickly and without much warning - I've known more than one person have teeth knocked out or being otherwise injured when they have found out the horse wasn't as sleepy as they thought it was.

Sedalin knocks my ticklish horse out until the clipping actually starts, then he suddenly springs to life and gets violent. I got the vet out to sedate him to clip him in the end last year, and will have to do the same this year.

I think sedalin can work on some horses but by no means all.

My mare is frightened to death by clippers. I give her 4ml of sedolin 30 minutes before the clipping lady arrives. She still snorts at her and leaps to the other side of the stable when the clippers are turned on. But, clipping lady is very quiet with my horse and as long as I'm next to her with a packet of mints in my pocket she settles long enough for a blanket clip. Tried doing legs, but gave up after 1 sweep of each leg! The vet posts me the sedolin, it comes in 10ml tubes about £15 each.

Another friend of mine uses Global Herbs super calm (10 sachets to a tub) and they seem very good too.

Same as that!

Jed will rear and strike at me to get me away from him with clippers.

Am having vet out on Friday to sedate him. Not sure on cost though.

I was wondering about getting my horse sedated by the vet as I can't get near her with the clippers, but doesn't it make them sweat and therefore difficult to clip?

syringe sedation (like the wormers) and it is really good.

I've seen that in tack shops. Maybe I'll try that before resorting to sedation. Thanks.

Btw, if one goes for the vet sedation option, are there degrees of sedation? Could a light dose be given?

Have you thought of twitching? My boy was clipped today and had to be twitched and worked wonders, he was sedated by a vet last time.

I got a quote from my vets for clipping sedation (IV) - £60

I quickly decided on sedalin and a twitch!!
BTW I have been told that increasing the dose of sedalin just increases the time that they are affected, not the degree (if that makes sense!)

The IV sedation does make them sweat, but if you start off with the bits that sweat first (neck between front legs and around groin) and leave the easy, non sweaty bits until last you should be ok.. I have had so many horrible 'wake up' experiences with ACP and Sedalin I will not use it, a twitch is ok if they only need it for certain bits, but don't like having to use it the whole time you are clipping, for that length of time you can damage the lip and have also had a couple of horses explode on me after 20 mins with a twitch on ... I know you should take the twitch off every 10 mins or so, .. but hey, lets be honest, once horses have had the twitch on once or twice , they start to get a bit clever and then you have problems getting it on again...
so .. I would go for the IV sedation if they are bad.. not cheap, but if you rug up early so they do not get too much coat, clip as late as you can manage, you can get away with only having them done 2 twice.

That isnt sedative, thats calmer and it wont work for clipping!
There is an oral paste sedative but it has to be prescribed by your vet
