Sedating for dentist, cost?

Hi,

Mr. nuissance decided he would be just that last week when the equine dentist came to do his teeth.
He got so wound up that sweat was running down his coat all over his body and he would just not calm down. We decided to stop and leave it as he was getting more and more stupid by the minute and eventually even started rearing at me in the stable whilst I was holding him.

The dentist is coming back to sedate him in about an hour to finally get his teeth done (which sound awful).

I am dreading the price, Does anyone know roughly the going rate for sedating a horse?
I'm in France but the rates are roughly the same.

I just hope we're not talking thousands here !
 
I've just Booked my vet for this. Around £30 for sedation plus whatever the call out charge is plus the time he has to spend with the dentist. I've booked my vets dentist to do the work to save the cost and faff of getting two people out.
 
I don't know if you can get it in France but for my pony I use Domestin gel - it is one of the active ingredience of IV sedation but you can give it yourself in a tube like a wormer. It is only about £20. I have a huge call out fee where I live so this is a big saving for me!
Worth looking into for next time
 
I give mine a whole tube of Sedazine on an empty stomach as this seems to make them sufficiently laid back about the dentist.

My dentist is also seriously calm with them and doesn't get heavy when they get silly. If they move around he just calmly goes with them and keeps on rasping.

Serenity the four legged buldozer was even standing still with her rope hanging free whereas normally she will have swept you off your feet and carried you around the stable.
 
Im waiting for my bill for having to have my young boy sedated. I was thinking about using a calming paste but had read that it needs to be given before they get even slightly worked up and my boy is one of those that notices everything so seeing the tube would work him up, and that can stop the paste from working. I just called the vet out instead as opposed to waste two lots of monies :D
 
Don't know what the law is in France but in the UK it's illegal for an EDT to sedate, it has to be done by a vet. Domosedan gel is very effective in a lot of horses, it has to administered under the tongue and given time to be absorbed but works out cheaper than a vet's call out. Most vets will prescribe it if they have seen your horse in the last 6 months.
 
My vet charged £70 for sedation and rasping teeth but now I've found an amazing equine dentist who is absolutely fantastic with my mare and she doesn't need to be sedated now.
 
Niagaraduval- When I had a vet out to sedate my horse for dentist I think it cost me about €80! (he was here for about 2 minutes, didn't really check horse over, injected him then left! When I asked him to at least write down what he had given him and how much he refused as he said he shouldn't even be doing it for a dentist!)

Eventing Mum- you mentioned the dreaded words "Law in France"... here it is illegal for a dentist to do your horse if he is using any electric tools as they are classed as surgical instruments. He/she is only allowed to use a rasp and remove a tooth that is already loose. Other than that it has to be a vet which is ridiculous as most dentists are much more qualified.

Luckily, the dentist I use now is great and after 15 years of having to sedate (sometimes 2 or 3 times) we now don't have to give him anything at all.

The last post was very interesting ? I don't understand, it is illegal to use electrical tools ? Mine just did ! He is also a reknown vet by the european norme for equine vets or something like that.

Was sooo young and good looking though... *drool*
 
"young and good looking" will he come as far as the Dordogne??

I will go off and google the information- I may have got it wrong but I remember there was uproar last year when new rulings were brought in- not only dentists but it also concerned farriers, osteos etc. As far as I can remember there was a problem with how the new legislation was worded so it wasn't quite clear what was allowed and what wasn't by whom etc. Things may have been clarified and worded better now so I will see what I can find out.
