Hi all,
I am moving yards with my horse on Friday and I'm concerned that he will get really stressed travelling by himself. A friend is moving me and has suggested sedating him lightly (sedalin)- is this a sensible thing to do or will it affect his ability to balance?
Another chum has volunteered her horse to travel with mine which would be the ideal solution as my boy would arrive much calmer and her horse is fine on his own for the journey back. The friend who is moving me has concerns though, that she would be responsible for him on the return journey if anything were to happen. Hence the sedation suggestion.
Any thoughts??
Oh, tomorrow is my last day of computer access for a while, so apologies if I dont reply to anyone who posts after mid afternoon on Thursday!

Thanks!!

I travelled Daisy on 10 ACP once when she had to go the vets to be scanned and I couldn't risk her kicking or flapping in the box. She travelled like an angel but I only did it on the vets advice

Ooh, I hadnt even thought of ACP, I have a stash of them too, from when he had laminitis

Its reassuring to hear that people do it successfully, I may be able to move him without making the day miserable for my friends horse!!
Thank you!!

I have travelled my mare back from the vets still lightly sedated from procedures without a problem - as the others said though, they can really sweat!

If you are going to use sedalin, if you have a largeish horse the best thing to do is to give them the whole tube - it may dope him out a bit more than you want but by the time you've faffed around with getting everything else organised he'll be fine!

(ps, before anyone feels the need to tell me off for that - it came from both VET and FARRIER

My boy is only 15.1 and when I have used it before I gave him 2 ml (I think! 2 notches of the tube anyway). I know it takes some time to kick in and is best done while they are calm, so I was thinking probably about 40 mins before I start to boot him up etc.
Will have electrolytes in his tea in the evening I think if he is going to get very sweaty!
Thanks for replying

Oh thats good to hear!
I am expecting him to be dripping anyway, he always does when excited or stressed!
Thank you

i find a nice sponge down with warm water and a wicking rug at the other end always perks them up!!

Will be able to do better than that- the new yard has a hosepipe with a hot/cold mixer tap!!

Never had hot water on a hosepipe before!!!

I was going to travel him in a fleece cooler as I know he sweats anyway, would you do that or leave him naked?

i'd put the fleece on, making sure the sircingles are right up to his belly, and have the windows open in the lorry...

Hi H,

Looks like sound advice to me

Who's taking you?

I'd probably rug him, as he's an old chappie - you don't want him catching a chill on the journey.

Anyway, sorry, this isn't much help, just wanted to say good luck for the move, I hope he copes with it well. And lucky you with your posh yard with hot and cold mixer taps

Ooh, I'm not going to tell him you said that, he would be most offended- he is still in the prime of his youth!!!!

I had 2 people volunteer to take me, so Kate is driving, and Katherine in coming for a nosey too

Thanks for wishing us luck, I do hope the sedation does the trick, it would be so much easier than taking Harvey for a day out too!
I know- get us with the posh yard

Just hope we are as happy there as we have been where we are now.
Love to your girl!

No, don't tell him! I mentioned something about Rana with her in earshot the other day - she refused to be caught for 10 minutes (in the bl**dy rain!).

Ah, fab. Kate moved Rana for me, and she was great.

Fingers crossed for you - let me know how he settles in, and give him a carrot from me.

I've used Global Herbs Instant SuperCalm to great effect. It's worked REALLY well on the three (very different) horses I've used it on. It's a herbal calmer so no sedative effect, but stops they getting stressy and wound up. It made a huge different to Kalli when travelling (can be stressy) and at the show (even more stressy) and it was noticeable when it started to wear off (about 3-4hrs)

It comes in a small plastic pot of 5 sachets (or 10) for the horribley expensive price of £12.50 for the 5.

You give it in feed and takes about an hour or so to take effect and lasts a good 3-4 hours.

It's not a sedative but does seem to work. There is no reason you couldn't feed it as well as the Sedalin as it's totally different.
