My pony needs his feather s clipping because he has mites, he is only two yrs old and never been clipped but he has a quiet temperment and let us do some of his front legs but from the knee down he just keeps moving around and kneeing. I think it's tickling him, he really hates it. I don't think he is scared of the clippers he just won't let us touch him now since he hates the feeling and because he is moving he has gotten a bit of a cut from the clippers. I was wondering what sedation would be best so he can't feel the clippers tickling and vibrating on him? He is only 12.1hh and around 300kg. Are they only sold from the vet? Obviously I don't wanna use sedation everytime he needs a clip so will be getting him use to it but since I need it done ASAP due to having mites I think that's the best option

You can only get sedation from the vet. I have never clipped using Sedalin or Domesedan (sp?) Only with vet given IV stuff so cant say how well the gels work.

Sedation sounds like the way forward at the moment to make him comfortable in tbe imediate future. After you have plenty of time to get him used to have hos legs clipped when they aren't as sore or itchy.

My 2-year old had a vet sedation to have the clip of shame - he had lice! He was fine as he was totally out of it for the clip and the girl that did him was quick and did a realy good job.

However, I am currently trying to desensitise him to the clippers on his legs as he's funny about his legs being touched. He is fine with his body, mane, face and ears. I do use Sedalin, but find he comes out of the sedation when he gets riled up. I was going to try demosedan, so following this post with interest to see if it may be a better solution.

Seen as he sounds not to bad I would try sedalin or domosedan first then you can start off with a high dose, then if you start de sensitising you can then reduce the amount if he starts to tolerate them.

Thanks for the replies so far :) yes he really is a sweetheart but as soon as he started feeling it tickle him in certain areas he wasn't having none of it! When we first started he was so chilled.

Im gonna ring the vets in the morning to see if I can pick something up. Somone said they may not let me get it unless they see him first tho?

My new pony has obviously had mites previously, and was showing signs so I have taken his feathers off. He is not frightened of the clippers, but doesnt like his legs being done, maybe because previously he was clipped when already sore.
I used Demosedan, which worked really well, and I hope that in the future he will be ok on Sedalin, and then maybe need nothing.

Wait and see how he reacts to it. I tend to wait until they are alert in the stable and getting cross about having no food!

Probably a bit late as I expect you’ve clipped him by now, but my experience of Domosedan gel is it’s very strong stuff. My horse is 650kg so should tolerate 3ml, but when she was given just 2ml for a dental, she was comatose within minutes, and didn’t move for 6 hours! Don’t go in with a high dose if you haven’t used it before.

He has been clipped now although not very good because the clippers didn't works good at all and died when I had only just done his front legs! Didn't even get to finish the front so cut with scissors as short as it goes and it all looks stupid... But at least they are all shorter now... Plus I got the vet to give him an injection for the mites and I've also been treating it. Do you think I'll need to clip all his legs to the same length in order to grow back properly as some is short and some still long and uneven? Or should I just leave it and it will all grow out to be the same length eventually!? The domosedan gel definitely worked, I was actually worried he was gonna fall over a few times. He is okay tho, alive and alert again x
