Sedation for dentist bill!

A little bit more than I'd expect but not majorly so.

Next time use some domosedan gel, mine used to be really difficult as she has a tooth problem, had her sedated by the vets but decided to try the gel and it works just as well on her for only £25

I live in the south east, perhaps that's why ! Vets only four miles away from yard too so not a lot of driving/petrol.
Please don't anyone say get horse to behave for the dentist, he is a large cob, (nuff said)

The last vets I used sedated every horse for teeth, they'd had a horse throw its head into owner with gag and owner was seriously injured.

I'd much rather have sedation if not sure on how they'll behave!

Mine cost over £300 to have vet out to give IV sedation and remove a tooth.
Most expensive visit from the tooth fairy ever!

I have to get one of mine sedated for teeth, last time it was £30 for the meds, but when you add the visit fee, the examination fee and the VAT, the total creeps up!

My vets would probably be about £150 for the sedation alone...

Can you transport the horse to the vets to get it done cheaper?

I found a vet who is also and EDT, although no sedation was needed. He was no more expensive than using an EDT.

Me too - with no call out for a pre booked appointment he was actually cheaper than the EDT I used to use, and has access to sedation if needed (never have yet). You aren't in Shropshire are you Doris68?

Get the vet to do it. You might find a local vet that is also an edt. The two main vets are my place are. I used to pay 170 for vaccinations and teeth with sedation. But now it's covered by a care plan that I pay monthly for

Probably about right really. I had my last horse sedated for clipping and cost about £100ish for call out, injection and vet's time. What made it more expensive is we tried the domeseden gel first and that didnt work at all on him (stubborn cob) so had to top up with injection. I think it was another £20 for the gel and then £40 for the clip so £160ish for a hunter clip that day!

Good job he only needs an annual visit, not 6 months like the other one! And a good chunk of the bill is of course VAT, which should be abolished on vets bills don't you think

I get my vet to do my horses' teeth as one of them has to be sedated. My last bill in December 2014 for the 2 horses was as follows:

£54 x 2 horses for rasping work = £108
£14.76 for sedative drugs (1 horse)
£14.75 for half share of visit fee (as someone else on yard needed annual vaccinations done)
= £137.51 plus VAT
= £162.27 total
- 10% discount for paying same/following day = £148.53

Apparently they sometimes also charge for administering the sedative but they didn't charge me for that this time. This is in Kent.

My vet is an EDT, who specialises, and gets referred work from both EDT's and other vets. Including sedation and teeth it is normally £70. Don't think I would be terribly happy at that bill.

Blimey.... that does seem pricey, my last bill was 97 pounds, for dental, sedation, flu jab and a quick lameness check. I did travel to the vets but still....

Sounds a tad expensive OP.
I use a vet who is also an EDT and she charges £40 for a routine float plus £25 if sedation is required (thankfully only one of mine is a drama queen).

That sounds a lot op. Its £30 for sedation here. Then the work on top.

It depends on how much sedation is needed and which drugs they are using.

Mine needs a lot of sedative for teeth and usually has Dolorex and SediVet which can come to £100 ish. Last visit was just under £60 but she didn't need her usual "top ups"

Tooth rasp is around £45 for minimal work, more if a lot more needed doing.

I would query the bill, unless you know your vets are usually very expensive!! It will depend on the amount of sedative used but I would expect the drugs to have cost between £15-30. So even allowing for the vet to administer and call out it seems very expensive.

My mare had her teeth rasped (done by a vet) in December and for the first time in 12 years had to be sedated. I put that down to having a male vet with not quite as much patience as he could have had. Anyway, I was worried that the sedation would bump the cost right up, but it was only an extra £10. Came to a total of about £45 altogether. OP, that is a huge amount.

Just got invoice for this £125 and that's without the EDT's fee ! Cost me £170 for nag to have teeth done

Feel your pain, having my phobic TB done, cost both arms and a leg, 3 injections later, he goes down fighting, trapping the vets legs in the process, vet and horse ended up battered and bruised, with the vet kneeling on my lad's neck to keep him down while EDT did his teeth, not an ideal situation, costing nigh on £200

We`re really lucky, if our horses need sedating the Vet comes with the EDT for free ... you just pay the sedation drugs costs ... usually about £30 ish ....
