For youngsters ??

Anyone had their youngster sedated ?

Going to have to sedate missy (yearling) as she detests getting her mane pulled , used something simliar to a solo comb but even that she didnt like, shes going to need her bridle path clipped along with her ears needing tidied any other bits of trimming for balmoral which is now less than 3 wks away .
Would rather sedate her so as not to cause her any distress or even worse someone getting injured although shes not too bad but you never can tell.

What your views on sedation ??

No way I would sedate for cosmetics

Obviously desensitising her is the way to go but you don't have the time. Have you tried a twitch?

she doesnt mind her ears being pulled and rubbed , I have cut her bridle path with scissors but not her ears, too scared to tidy her ears incase I nick them . I have got a small hair clipper that i knicked from hubbie (sshhhuuussshhh dont tell him ) lol

Its quite quiet and have left it on beside her until the battery ran out, did touch it but she went nutts .

I really dont want to nick her esp when working around the ears .

I have tried a twitch on her too and shes having none of it .

Hence why i think sedation is the last option .

No I would never consider sedation for something as trivial as this I'm afraid. Each to their own though.

To an extent I agree that sedation should not be used for mane pulling etc. However I also think that if the sedative is mild she may begin to relax more with the trimming when she realsies it isnt going to hurt and longterm she might improve.

Some horses are really sensitive to mane pulling. One of mine would try to kill if you tried to pull his mane. Im afraid I cut it now! But hes 31 and retired so doesnt matter if he looks funny! And as he doesnt have a mirror he cant see himself and therefore cant get embarassed!!!

Colleen, we have had the most awful trouble pulling the yearlings mane. But perserverence has paid off. He's had a bit done every day for the last week or so - and is getting much, much better. I'm not sure that you can expect them to accept this overnight - so would definately recommend little and often. Personally I would not put a bridle path in her mane at this age for showing in hand either. And I definatley wouldn't sedate.

Gt a little harsh I have not sedated her yet !!! nor did I say I was , so little quick to jump the gun dont you think ??

I have been pulling little and often , she has reared up and struck out with her front leg .

I have been pulling at it since we got her last oct

So to say that I am expecting it overnight is a tad silly, nor would I think that .

I have only asked views on it I have not said that I am going to sedate her .

she has allowed me to cut her bridle path (about an inch of hair )
