Hi there am after some information on sedation, my daughters pony needs to be sedated for clipping, probably being a bit blond here but can does anybody know if there is anything i can buy to sedate her without having to have the vet out, am not sure how big her reaction to clipping is only had her for 3 months, am getting clippers out at weekend not to use but just switch on and see how she reacts. Any advice appreciated.

You can get sedalin gel from the vet which you administer yourself. I used it on my mare and it didnt work but she is terrified of clippers. Really depends how bad the horse is it does take the edge of them.

Our pony has to be sedated by the vet to be clipped as he is terrified of the clippers and it's kinder and easier to do it this way,the vet did let us have some sedolin but said it probably would'nt work as he is so bad, you could try it and see tho

The stuff you can use yourself is less effective and doesn't work at all if the horse is stressed before you administer it. Too much adrenalin/a big fright will also mean that the horse can overcome it.

We gave my friends horse sedalin the first couple of times we clipped him and it did help. However, he really wasn't that bad, just a bit anxious. Mine has a real issue with clippers and will even try and fight sedation by the vet.
Agree it depends how bad your horse is - if she's really bad it probably wouldn't work.

my horse is ok to be clipped - used to be terrified but can clip her anywhere now except under her belly and other really tickly areas - which is a pain as end up with v random clip desighns!!- we used sedalin to try and take the edge off her for her tickly bits - she was def better but still not happy about it - and was v calm wen we gave her it - if horse is really bad wud say get vet out - however - the more the horse gets used to clippers the less hassle they are - mine was absolutely terrified - i spent ages and ages with her every day playing around with them - can now clip her head without having to restrain her in any way
