Sedative options for turnout?

Colic pony is not behaving! After having a few sessions out in his individual tiny paddock, he’s now realised he’s unclipped and he is exploding.

I feel very strongly that for both his mental and physical wellbeing, he needs to be turned out 24/7 in a small paddock now. But he is just really tricky to handle now so I’m not sure how to do it. He’s been good up until now but he’s just completely had enough.

The paddock he’s going to is a good 5 min walk up a quiet lane. I need sedative ideas that will allow him to still walk that far, and be turned out on grass after.

I’m wondering about valerian? Dormosedan will be too strong for the walk I think.

Please share any ideas!
 
I've always used sedalin which is acp in a tube I have used half a tube with for the first few turn outs and I put them on fresh grass in a small area, and stand with them for a bit while they graze then just unclip the rope and stay nearby and supervise and just leave them out before it wears off then each day extend the turnout and reduce the sedalin.

I've never had any mad run around antics and I've got Arab's and they don't like being contained, I found a small paddock with a companion they know better than a tiny individual space, Arabi would just stand there bucking, rearing and being an idiot so that's what I did.
 
Valerian made no difference to my horse, nor did any other otc calmers. I have to travel one of mine on dormosedan and he can still walk up to and on/off the trailer OK, so I doubt a 5 min walk would be a problem. Sedalin, I think, is longer lasting so may be better for turnout, again mine have always been able to walk about if necessary. It takes 20-30 min to have a noticeable effect on mine but he's a big boy.
 
I used Sedalin/ Relaquin when turning out mine after colic surgery this year. Had to give well before t/o up to an hour to really kick in and given when already calm. It worked well and for hand-grazing prior to that.

From what I understand/ have read valerian needs to build up and doesn’t have an immediate effect.
 
Sedalin, or that stuff with mares milk equivalent -Zyklene

Large quanties of ACP did nothing for my horse at all. When he was coming off small paddock and box rest I had to move him back home from his rehab yard which involved a short 5 min lorry drive and a couple of minutes walk across a wide open field to his turn out.

My vet (who had seen his antics during the last check up), left me with an IM injectable sedative to do it safely (one they normally put directly in a vein, but owners arent allowed). Worked a treat - free to ask them the question. Or get them out to sedate him.
 
We used trazodone for our old boy who just couldn't cope with box rest. You do have to play around with the dosage a bit, he got the tremors at the recommended dose, half the amount made him calm and easy to handle.
 
Could you use a lower dose of Dormosedan to take the edge off?

Years ago when my horse had been on box rest for an injury over in NI, I was concerned he'd undo the repair when first turned out. The yard manager said they'd always just put on a couple of extra turnout rugs on to curb the exuberance. I'm sure this would be frowned upon now, but all I can say is that it did work.
 
Just got some sedalin today for our friesian that is on field rest until feb. He had started pacing and just getting a bit fed up of being in a smaller area. I’ve given him 1.5 ml tonight and he is a big horse - and it’s made him calm. Not sedated at all, but just chilled out so that’s perfect. It might work out quite expensive until Feb giving him a bit each day but equally complete box rest will also send him crazy so I am hoping this will help him to be a bit more relaxed.
