Just a quickie. My new boy needs to have Sedolin before being shod. My farrier is saying an hour before, but I am sure it says shorter than that on the instructions (10 to 15 mins). Can someone please confirm the best timing to give him before being shod? Also, is it best to give in feed or straight down the neck?

Sorry have never had to do this before with my older boy, so am a bit blonde with it all!

Sedalin is very trial and error. You cant 'top up' if it doesnt kick in or if you have given the wrong dose. Some are really good on it and others fight it.,

Go with your farriers suggestion this time and see what happens.

I gave it to my horse for clipping recently as a change from ACP, and I gave it to him 1/2 hour before, but i reckon it really took about 45minutes to take full effect. My vet also said that if it does start to wear off, you can top it up anyway.

we used to give it to my tb mare 1 hour before shoeing anything less and you could not get hnear her so its trial and error - good luck

Good luck Senty. Ive just got some so I can clip my boys legs. He dont mind being clipped everywhere else just his legs! + theyre white and hes prone to mud fever - doh. Last time it took 20 ACP's and he still fought it off, but his reactions were slower.

I've got the sedalin thing down to a fine art now. I've found that it takes at least 40 mins for it to start taking effect, so 1 hour before is ideal. Put it straight in - no feed it works better and a quiet stable with no excitement. If they get too worked up the adrelin counteracts the sedalin.

Good luck

I don`t rate Sedalin at all! My TB was a nightmare for the Farrier when i first got him, he would stand really still one minute and the next he would explode! He was so sharp even the farrier when he was holding a leg up couldn`t tell when he was going to go off on one. Needless to say Sedalin had no effect whatsoever.

He did get better eventually though, although i suspect this was down to me spending every spare minute lifting his legs and tapping his hoof.

In my experience wth several diff horses, takes about 45 mins before starts to take any effect. Also need prob need at least twice recommended dose if anything like two I've got at mo for clipping/trimming etc!!!!!!!!!

I gave sedolin to my horse an hour befor the vet came to sedate him for clipping. the vet actually managed to sedate him being twitched and without a fight and us both getting squashed against the wall, a real bonus!!! it def helped, as the adrenaline was not so high in his system which made the injection work! but i did leave the yard so everything was very quiet!
after 10 years of hell trying to sedate him, this was by far the best !!!! and i'm alive!
