Seedy toe and sugardine?

Firstly - how do I make sugardine paste?

My horse has had a chunk of hoof cut away by the farrier, from the front of his hoof wall, where he had seedy toe. Vet said (over the phone) "use some sugar dine paste in there"

I've never used this though - can anyone help me?

Hi,
Sugardine is a mix of betadine and sugar, made into a thick honey like paste.
Its to draw out infection, like a poultice. Does your horse have an abscess ?
I haven't used it, but when my boy had hoof wall removed due to seedy toe I used copper sulphate mixed with vaseline packed around the resected hoof and nail holes.
Keeping the feet really dry was the biggest thing though.
It might be worth giving the vet who suggested it, or your farrier who saw your horse a ring to clarify what is best.

When my mare had seedy toe my farrier sold me 'Anti-bac'. Brilliant stuff and it was gone in no time.

Please remember that seedy toe or if fact most necrotic tissue that is kept within the hoof capsule is fed by Anaerobic bacteria, that is they love being suffocated, so think before you put anything in, on, or near an area that would heel quicker if exposed to the air.
Any form of iodine solution I find works well when I know the area is only in need of hardening off, not when I suspect that there is still anything in there.
As a farrier I would always recommend with the vets approval cutting out any effected area and keeping it clean and exposed, in most cases the vet would then ask what should we plug the hole with, to which I would always say ‘clean salt water and time’!

Anti-bac is great, as is 'live' honey - works well with my lad's feet
