Seedy toe

The farrier cam out to see my youngster last week and explained how he had trod on a stone and that had caused a small hole in his hoof. Anyway, on closer inspection, I'm quite sure he's got Seedy toe. He lives out, we have mud and I want to try and help his foot heal. I've got some hydrogen perovide and some cotton wool, if I clean it out with the hydrogen perovide and then pack with cotton wool, would this help? Any advice taken!
 
My vet gave me hydrogen peroxide to syringe in until there were less bubbles coming out, then told me to soak cotton wool with purple spray and pack it with that. I did that once a day for 4/5 days then plugged it with Keratex hoof putty and left it alone. It seems to have worked... I think!
 
If it is seedy toe, do NOT pack it. It is caused by an anearobic (sp) organism that thrives in airless conditions, such as when a hole is packed.
 
Have to agree with Donkeymad! My previous horse had bad seedy toe and had to have a large portion of the front of his hoof removed to expose and kill the anaerobic bacteria. It took months to heal but he did come sound!!

If its a small hole get your farrier to nip it in the bud before the bacteria munch their way further up the hoof capsule (my ex-farrier convinced me it was nothing to worry about and left it (ar*e)....resulted in six months off and if it had been left any longer we would have lost him).

Don't mean to scare you but I know how bad seedy toe can be so please do something about it sooner rather than later!
