Hi,
May be this should go somewhere else but I couldn't find a Farriery part of the forum! Briefly, my friend's cob mare has been diagnosed with Seedy Toe. I think this is the 'external' type as it was discovered in the outside, front of the mares two hind hooves during shoeing, and there was no separation at the white line. Farrier has cut large inverted 'v' shapes so far into the hooves that you can see most of the shoe at the bottom, wider part of the groove. Farrier has told us to scrub the groove out and clean it with a solution he supplied of eucalyptus and iodine. My friend says he told her to do this once every 2 days and my friend seems unconcerned by the condition. I have since investigated the condition and discovered some real horror stories about it (linked to laminitis, causing lameness etc). I keep the horse at my place and I woud be happy to clean it once every day (my firend only comes over every 2 - 3 days) as I feel - as the horse is on wet / muddy pasture - the cleaner it is kept the better. I really want to help my friend's horse but can anyone tell me whether it is too much to clean it daily, or even twice daily (i.e. will it do more harm than good?). Also, is there any other product people can recommend as the farrier's stuff won't last long, and I doubt we'll have cured it by the time it runs out. We also need to encourage rapid hoof growth, because of the groove - any suggestions about this please? Any advice gratefully received.

Bleach/Hydrogen Peroxide solution, syringe or cotton wool to make sure you get it right into the hole. If your friend is happy for you do do it everyday then do. The changeable weather means there's alot about at the moment.

White lightening gel is really good

it won't harm healthy tissue like peroxide/ bleach can do

Thanks ever so much for this - maybe farrier said OK every couple of days because friend can't do it more often than that.
Thanks again for your help. Had another thought - because of wet and mud - would antibacterial hoof putty be any good if it would stay in there? Or is it best left open to air? Thanks again.

No, do not put any hoof putty or anything else in it. It is an anaerobic condition and needs air to kill it. iodine.eucalyptus. tea tree are really the best things to treat it with, although others can work. Don't panic over it, it rarely casues any long term issues, especially as it has been caught early.

Many thanks for all advice - I think I saw a Donklet exchange of info on Seedy Toe on another part of the forum - that was also very helpful (I remember the cute Pebbles pic!). I get a bit muddled trying to find my way about on here, and sometimes I can't seem to find the same area twice! Anyway, thanks again everyone.
