My horse has seedy toe after just recovering from laminitis. Are there any sumpliments that you would recommend me? Anything that will make it a bit better?
Thanks for helping!
Regular salt water foot baths are beneficial in my personal experience, plus spraying the foot with plenty of iodine each day, or using 'fresh frog'
In terms of feeding, black sunflower seeds are cheap and meant to be very good for the hooves
Also feeding magnesium is very beneficial for hooves, it too is incredibly cheap, it has worked absolute wonders for my laminitic, ex seedy toe sufferer who is very prone to thrush
your farrier needs to pare away the seedy toe and expose it to the air as it is an anerobic fungal bacteria (this means that it multiplies in airless conditions.
then you ned to keep clean there are many products you can use and try some work better than others on different horses.
our vet recommends using hydrogen peroxide (get it from a pharmacy) and putting that into the hole your farrier has created by digging it out.
Its a fungus that love the anaerobic nature of the bit under your horses shoes, and the hydrogen peroxide reacts with the fungus cells and bursts them open killing them off.
every day or twice a day for 6 weeks should get rid of it!
The other thing imo to bear in mind is diet. I'm sure you've looked at this as she's had lami but a balanced high forage, low sugar diet also helps the foot grow healthy and grow out the ST. Seedy toe doesn't tend to get a hold in good strong feet, I believe it's a sign the lamina are compromised/weakened through diet or trim. Wet conditions don't help either so making sure the horse has some dry time each day if out is a good plan.
I plugged with cotton wool soaked in diluted milton solution changing daily and it cleared or should I say grew out nicely. First ensuring that all small stones were carefully removed.... I found a very narrow electric screw driver good for this bit!
If the horse is shod imo it's best to have shoes off as it's hard to keep gunk out and clean properly with shoes in the way. I'm sure The Farrier wont agree with that btw. I'm just saying what worked for me and what I believe.
