My eldest sister got a horse when she was 11 but as she was so much older than my other sister and I when she left home and he was too big for a 6 and an 8 year old the horse was given to another family my parents knew. However, other sister and I were then allowed riding lessons, rode from age 8 to 15. Long break for 24 years before I got on a horse again and I'm the only horsey one now in that I'm the only one who has a horse, other 2 sisters like horses still but don't ride anymore.

All my family are horsey- at one point all 4 of us were all sharing our TB (poor soul!) so we had to expand the yard. My dad used to hunt and we all used to ride out together a lot. Now my parents don't really ride, but the horses are definitely still a family affair and they help out at lot- very lucky really.

not really. mum got into horses when i started to ride, but my family doesnt have a horsey background.

my dad gets roped into doing jobs around the yard and doesnt complain too much nowadays now that weve got our own place rather than on livery.

Bro however is Mr Vain

last time he came to see me at the yard (end of September) he turned up in his brand new white sparkly trainers and a white t-shirt to match - silly silly boy. Saying that though he does help me out with jobs (when hes around - currently living in Manilla with work and missing him loads) he does try to help with the horses but inevitably he does like the mud, muck or the way they smell

My family have no interest in horses, so neither did I until I met my husband. He bought me my first horse as a wedding present, and although until his gelding died, horses were always classed as his or mine, or the childrens, we both helped each other.

I've been reading H&H for about 5 years now, so I figured I might as well try the forum

Neither of my parents were horsey but my sis and I were always pony daft and we had ponies when we were kids. We both had a few years away from horses but are now back into it big style - i've got 1 and she's got 2. We live at opposite ends of the country so spend a lot of time on the phone/email discussing vets bills etc. My sis's eldest daughter is also mad keen but her other daughter has no interest at all. Neither of our OHs are remotely interested in horses.

I have nobody in my family that is truly horsey (apart from my auntie who is a bit of a part timer, she has a horse (that is looked after but not ridden by someone else) but probably sees it once every 2 - 4 weeks if it is sunny and she can be bothered!)

My sisters think horses are smelly wastes of space, and my Dad only cares because they make me so happy, I wouldn't be able to ask for his help with anything.

Immediate family, no. My grandmother rode as a child/teen and my aunt had a riding school, and still runs a livery yard.

On the other side one of my 2nd cousins breeds and shoes Irish Draughts.

I'm the only horsey one in my family. They don't like the fact I smell a lot!

Exactly the same! :P When I mentioned how much i spent on madame and how much I could sell her for they all replied in unison "Sell her!" I don't think they quite get it! lol Though mum does occasionally go down and give her a carrot when I'm at uni, bless!

My sister has a pony and used to ride, getting her back in to it. But the horse she used to ride and adore broke his leg in his field, so it put her off for a few years!
But apart from us no one else! My Dad calls them 3 legged donkeys

Think you and I have had this conversation before!

My sister likes being clean! And my brother is into cars. Mum was totally houseproud but grew up in the West Country as an Evacuee during the war - so loved the countryside.

Dad grew up in Kent working on farms when he was a lad. He was more interested in tractors than animals, but I can only guess this is where my interest in being 'out in the field' and 'on the horse' comes from!

My Aunts and Uncles think I'm the weird one of them family!....playing with my horses. And should come indoors, clean up, and find myself a husband!!

I wanted to ride in my teens, couple of my friends had lessons, but my parents refused to pay for lessons, so I had to walk to school and save enough bus fare to afford the odd lesson now and then, the rest of the time I did chores at the RS in the hope that Mr O'Sullivan would allow me a lesson in return.
My parents were thoroughly against wasting my money on riding. However subsequently my father discovered his fathers father was a carrier and got run over and killed by his own horse and cart! This was severely detrimental to the finances of the family, so I do wonder if the disapprooving of horses thing was deep rooted?!

Neither of my brothers rode or even got on a horse, likewise I had motorbikes and neither of them did either. Older brother was more interested in maths (is it any wonder he's a financial advisor?). Younger brother is very fit and into cycling, and thinks nothing of spending as much on a new titanium or carbon fibre new bike as anyone else might spend on a horse!
OH's family (both sides) were in farming, and the outdoor stuff is all down to him - fencing, haymaking etc. Daughter from the age of being able to walk has been horse mad, as there's a nearby riding school come past regularly as well as a lovely lady who rode a friendly horse called Jasper and she used to stop and let my daughter pet him.

My Dad still thinks horses are a phase I'll grow out of! Lol - I've been riding since I was 4 and am 26 now... bleedin long phase!

My Mum is terrified of them, but was OK with River and my brother is so alergic that last time he just popped down to say hi at the yard he ended up in hospital for three days - he even gets poorly getting in my car... So its fair to say I come from a VERY non horsey family.

Luckily the BF loves them and is talking about, in a few years, getting his own - he's just getting back into riding & is a dab hand at all yard jobs

my mum rode and shared a horse with her friend when she was a teenager. then she had lessons again about 10 years ago, but lost interest. my dad has ridden about 10 times in 25 years and is not really interested.
my brother is not interested but he did ride my old pony i had when i was 13 a few times.
I have been horse mad since my mum finally gave in and let me have a pony ride while on holiday when i was 4.
Can't wait for my 2 year old to start riding! she already nabs my horse and hound mags to look at and say "aahhh!" to all the little chestnut ponies(?!)
