For those wondering why we got another spanner when we can't cope with one, a very good friend has lent us Iz while Tawny and Pen are both broken. (Only a bit broken, but they both need time off).
Will give us a chance to hopefully understand how they think.
One question though - she has not had a litter but has very prominent nipples and if she jumps up she has a small bulging tummy. Owner hasn't seen anything going on but she is kennelled with a dog. What does an early pregnant bitch look like?

Gorgeous! i'll have the brown and white one( you will have to imagine a smiley face here as for some reason i can't insert one)
My brother in law always has Dobermans until 2 months ago when his girlfriend came home with a Springer pup, to say he has had a bit of an upset in his life would be the understatement of the year. He looks like a man possessed as it never stops or seems to sleep at all and the existing Dobe thinks it is the funnest thing ever and has discovered zoomies!
I'm pretty certain my Weim would absolutely love one of your two to come and live here! xxxx!

What an early pregnant bitch looks like is a bit how long is a piece of string to be honest.
How long do you have her for?
Nothing changed for the bitch that I have recently posted about having puppies regarding her care until 2 weeks before the pups were due. At the point she was huge and obviously pregnant and she started checking out places to whelp so I moved her into a kennel on her own. So I would not change her care for a fair while even if she is in pup. I increased food from about week 6.
She did not change apart from a bigger belly until about ten days before the pups were due at which point her mammarys developed.
She remained wired to the moon right up till the pups were born at which point she settled for a couple of days.
They are 2 very pretty girls in your photo though

Presumably the owner doesn’t watch them 24/7 so may not have seen a tie. He has an entire male with her?? She’s very pretty, reminds me of Brig when younger.

Owner has no idea when she was last in season (has rather a lot of dogs tbh). It is her pot belly that gets me, like a small football where a human would have a baby bump. Yes she has been with an entire male, a border x patt x jrt terrier. In fact the pups (if they are in there) would be cracking beating and rough shooting dogs I should think, but perhaps not what was intended for a well bred trialling bitch!
She is very pretty. Funnily enough though I prefer Smut's character, which is odd as generally I just find Smut cute but mildly irritating. Iz is very needy indeed, and insecure, which (in my highly unqualified opinion) you see in a lot of trialling dogs of all breeds. Although she does constantly stare at you, which apparently is what you want in a spanner, rather than Smut staring at pigeons!

He sounds a really responsible chap!

Very early signs of pregnancy in a bitch would be a rounded tum, enlarged/pinker nipples than belly colour (if in a white tummied dog), and thats really about it to be honest.

From 35 days of pregnancy a botvh can be reliably scanned as being pregnant or not, but if bloke has no idea when she was actually in season that may not be helpful! As you wouldn't know when to scan...

But if she continues to get rounder and pinker then I would scan in 2-3 weeks...though she may well be vey obviously pregnant by that point

Well, a rounded tummy and pink nipples kind of sums her up... luckily she goes back in 2 weeks so it won't be my problem. :-)

Beautiful photo. Gorgeous spaniels! I had to double check it was you who’d posted Clodagh, as I couldn’t believe you’d got a second 😂

Doesn’t sound ideal about the oops pregnancy if that is what it turns out to be.

Well Iz went home today. She is needy but not really trained, and working a spaniel (or any dog) without a stop whistle is like driving a car without brakes. She is an absolute sweetheart and if it was any time of year other than now I would make the effort to train her but I just have too much on my plate. She is so in need of one on one attention. I am a bit sad, but Smut the spanner is pleased as she gets me back!

You could always get a replacement :D

Springers are addictive once you start. You tell yourself "never again" but then you begin to miss the madness and the mayhem and before you know it, there's another one in the back of your car!!

I will certainly never have another! One and only. Just not my sort of dog. I love my labs, and they make me feel less incompetent than the spanner!
