Any tips on seeing good strides? Is it all in the balance, I always try and keep balanced but never really no the stride untill about 3 strides out, where it is then to late to do anything about it! What is the secret of training your eye in?

lots of practise! Also riding lots of different horses.

Same here MoonWalker! More I look the less I see, as long as you ride your corners properly, keep a good rhythm and are straight you should come on a good stride.....

....though it doesn't always turn out like that in my case

To quote the great Mr Stockdale...

Canter, rhythm, line. Gets it right everytime...

Remember, you can never be more than half a stride out, and if you are 'seeing' a stride 3 strides out then you have plenty of time to lengthen or shorten accordingly...so long as you have trained your horse to do so.

So much of it is about confidence and riding off your corners too. If you start riding backwards you will find yourself in all sorts of trouble

Rambo says it perfectly! Ive been having lessons jumping and my instructor says she can see when its going to go wrong a mile away as my rhythm changes and then it all goes pear shaped! Rhythm, Rhythm, Rhythm thats the key for me, a good positive, bouncy canter and we can jump anything.

I think Mr Stockdale refers to it as stretching for a kerb step
