This is like every horsie persons dream.....to open your curtains in the morning and see your horse happily grazing or looking out of his/her stable door waiting for their breakfast.

I could now actually have this......there is a yard behind my house I can see the fields and stable block from my bedroom window - only trouble is theres no school, it's quite expensive for what it is but alot less than what I'm paying now, fencing is rubbish, but grazing is good and theres only about 6 horses and 2 owners which are best friends so I would feel a bit of a loner lol.

I was thinking of retiring my horse she has arthritis but at the moment she is 100% and I'm even allowed to start jumping agian so not going to retire till she tells me it's time and that could be years away.

So my question is really - would you keep your horse at a yard that was less than ideal because you could see it from your bedroom window?

I keep my horse in a field behind my house and manage very well without a school, the field holds up very well to me riding on it as we are on light land, it is also nice and flat. Would there be a possibility of you riding on the fields?

Re the fencing, I would not be able to put my horse out with poor fencing, but could you fix it or put electric inside their fencing?

It may be more expensive than another yard but think of the saving on petrol / time?

I think you need to write a list of pro's and con's along with possible work-arounds for the cons

Nope. I would rather have the facilities!. I'm lucky my horses live at home, so in summer when they are in the summer paddock, i open my curtains to see my horses happily grazing, with neat post and rail fencing!!!!!! Can't get much better than that!!!!!!!!

Nooo! Been there done that. I had my horse at home before I could drive as it was convenient. But it was sooo lonely! The only other two people there were a couple and their two horses and I felt so out of place. And when it came to disagreeing on things, which is inevitable where horses are concerned, they were also going to side against me so I never had a leg to stand on...
We didn't have a school and our fields got wet very quickly so riding in winter was virtually impossible. I ended up wintering my mare out and then she was difficult to bring back into work so I lost confidence with her.

It was a downward spiral for me and I ended up completely demoralised. I know it isn't like this for everyone but I'd personally never do it again.

I found when i had my horse on the doorstep I actually saw less of him than when i made the effort to go and see him a few miles away. The niggly things you see now will get bigger after a few months, well they would for me anyway

I think you're right, I wouldn't be able to ride in the fields as the person who owns it is very grass proud and wouldn't want something extra making the fields worse! When I say the fencing is crap I mean it's not post and rail and I could put electric up anyway. Also my horse doesn't really like hacking!!!
I dont thing I'll be moving there while she is still in work but it is something to think about when she does retire although that could be 15 years away!!
I know it was silly to consider it but it just sounds so idyllic (sp)

Ive got mine at home (6 of them) and love it, cant imagine being on a yard now.... and I often open the shutters on the bedroom window so see the stallion looking in....lol.. my lot often have the electric fencing down, (at least once a week) and escape... luckily I live in a National Park in Spain, so Its not a problem.. and my bedroom is downstairs..hence him looking through the window..

Most yards have their pro's and cons, I would love to have my mare outside my house as I used to when we had the small holding in wales. It really does depend on what you want from this yard as to whether you move your horse there, personally I think I would give it a try at least, see how it goes

I used to have mine in the field next to our house and it was the best thing in the world to have them putting their heads over the fence for a carrot, or nipping over the stile to feed them before school. But having moved 200 miles away from "home", for the last 15 years they've been at a yard 10 miles away. The yard has better facilities but I'd take the plain old field next door any day.
