Ok, I know these threads come up quite often and really I am only posting in disbelief. cocker pei's, why?? £600, really??

I also presumed that it means Cocker Spaniel X Shar Pei?

But why anyone would want to cross this (photos found through Google image search)

Is beyond me.

Neither do I understand why people would want to pay £600 for such a crossbreed puppy, especially if the so called breeder, is yet another one of those persons who believes that hybrid vigour will magically make so that all potential health problems disappear.

The puppies are probably cute and adorable, but so is the majority of all puppies, and then, they grow up. Will they still be cute and adorable as adults, have a nice temperament, and a suitable home...

I know someone who has a springer x shar pei. Not a deliberate cross but the result of a misalliance, he was the only pup and she took him on as the owner of the bitch was a muppet (hence the misalliance). He is a lovely dog, looks like a shar pei with a longer coat, but unfortunately has had ongoing skin problems all his life, even though he has less wrinkles than a pure shar pei. The fact that he has a longer coat means he gets even more uncomfortable when he is itchy. She is managing to keep him comfy with a very expensive diet and lots of vets bills but I expect many people would have given up on him. :(

I didn't want to paint the devil on the wall, but that was something I was worried about MurphysMinder, that the puppies might inherit skin problems from the Shar Pei, together with a longer Cocker Spaniel coat.

:frown4:

I googled this cross breed and the images are all different...the F1 generation ,ie the phenotype, is not consistent and thus does not produce a type.
I don't see any value in the creation of this mixture.

.....usually it is my poodle breed that bears the brunt of these hybrid crosses...I don't care for these either as they detract from the essence of what creates the type and function of a wonderful dog that has been selected for over a
century or more.

I copied this info from one random link selected from google on this creation...oh dear......!!!

Cocker-Pei Health
Allergies: The Cocker-Pei may suffer from seasonal allergies and an allergy to grass clippingsas. To help prevent food allergies they can be fed high quality food and only all natural treats.

Eye Health: The Cocker-Pei may suffer from Cherry Eye which can require surgery to correct. They may also be prone to an eye condition similar to pink eye which requires ointment to correct. They may also get a lot of eye-goop in both eyes needs to be wiped away.

Ear Health: The Cocker-Pei should have their ears cleaned once a week to help prevent infection which they are prone to. There may be visible dirt and wax in the ear when you go to clean them.

Dental Health: The teeth and face of the Cocker-Pei require frequent cleaning as they may suffer from foul breath because of the large jowels.

And temperament.

Character

The Cocker-Pei is a wonderful breed known to be intelligent but also stubborn. Given this breeds strong will, it is almost impossible to easily train this breed. A firm, but calm and consistent training regiment will be required. The Cocker-Pei is protective of family. Socialization with dogs, rodents and children should begin from birth.

Oh dear, that really isn't the prettiest dog. Hopefully it's a lovely 'person'"

Does anyone on here own a shar pei? I only ask because in that description it says that it is "almost impossible to easily train this breed". As Cockers are in general very easy and amenable (or maybe we've just been lucky) I found that quite surprising. Are Shar Peis quite difficult then? Or is that description spouting rubbish? As is shown from the skin problems, it's clearly a terrible idea for a crossbreed, but hey ho, nowt as strange as folk.

We have a mastiff x shar pei (rescue dog and accidental mating) and he is the nicest natured dog I have ever met - though he looks a bit ferocious...

Awful money making practice. Unfortunately joe public seems to fall for the ridiculously priced "designer dog" craze. Then to add insult they refer to these dogs as a "breed". My stupid sister in law has a "pure bred" jackahua. I've told her its neither JR or Chihuahua. It's a very expensive mongrel.
I live in hope the fashion will die out soon, but I'm not confident it will.

They have now dropped the price to £500 so guess not having much interest. They are however also advertising pointer x lab puppies, which I know can be quite useful but are describing both litters as much sought after designer hybrids. Face palm moment...

On "Done Deal" they seem to be selling JRs crossed with everything from Spaniels to pugs!? Why? I've also seen pedigree Labradoodles for 1,000 euros, are they now pedigree?

Its just an easy cheap way any old nobody can breed dogs and earn a few quid, and why people pay £600 or more for what is a mongrel is just plain stupid but while they can sell em people will keep breeding them, very sad:(
