Has anyone done this before? What were your experiences of it?

Thinking of taking the Fat Man to the qualifier at Towerlands, but schedule is not up yet.

Can anyone jog my memory re. classes? Thinking along the lines of Riding Horse.

Thanks

This is a great experience you will thouroughly enjoy it no profesionals about with noses in the air and the judges give great advice as to what you are doing wrong if any !! we stayed after the rosetts were given out in the ring and the judge gave there oppinion on my horse and a few tips I would go for it yes there are ridden classes we came out 4th out of about 25 so we were well chuffed but I'm not showing again as its so expensive what with the travel and cost of entries also your always up against these professionals who don't even talk to you !! and some judges who can't ride one side of a horse . So have fun and go for it get your entry in early as its getting very popular I think they have a site if you get in the first 6 you can have another go the next year.

Hey Finni.

A friend of mine did it with their WB - got through to the final at HOYS I believe. They also did the Towerlands qualifier as far as I know although it was a couple of years ago.

I think they must have done the Riding Horse class judging by the type of horse he is.

If you've got any specific questions, I can ask them if you like?

riding horse is always a tweed jacket, only hacks wear navy

I did it a few years ago. We were 2nd at the wwilts qualifier in the RC showhorse & 5th in the finals. It was absolutely amazing and definitely worth a go.

My friend did it and qualified both her horses. It was brilliant. I went to HOYS with them and it was a great experience.

Go for it!!!!

Definitely give it a go- it's something I'd love to do, but sadly can't because they don't run it for M&M's! It seems like a really good experience, and I think you get a lot of feedback off the judges as well, which is always good!

Definitely worth having a go. However, with the judges they use, there is no point entering if your horse has any "bad" conformation defects such as curbs. They are not too bothered about splints.

Make sure the horse is happy in its mouth and gives the judge a good ride. Get your horse used to different people riding it. Listen carefully to the comments and don't argue with the judge or make excuses.

Beg, borrow or steal the most comfortable saddle, the best fitting gear etc and looks as professional as you possibly can. The entries are sometimes huge and you will need to stand out from the crowd.

I know several people who have taken part and competed in the final at HOYS and they have gone on to achieve great things with their horses. Nearly everyone that goes to a qualifier takes something positive away from the experience - the judges are incredibly helpful and really want eveyrone to do as well as they possibly can.

Meant to add that never worry about the pros at other shows being horrid to you. Most of the time they are naturally nice and relaxed people and bear in mind that it is in their interest to be nice to newcomers as they never know when a potential client may be talking to them!
We showed for years as amateurs and were given loads of help by the professionals for which I am eternally grateful!
