Several years ago my horse had, what I can only call, a “seizure.” She was walking beside me when her muscles began to twitch all over her body…her legs became very stiff and she stumbled backwards and sideways. After a few seconds she was fine. The vet examined her and said that he couldn’t find anything wrong with her. I watched her closely for several days and she didn’t have another one. The day after it happened I thought she was a little clumsy but in retrospect I think I was just worried and freaked out.
I’m wondering if you guys have any idea what could cause something like this…I’ve been doing some research for a class and I can’t seem to find any reason why a horse would have 1 seizure.
Epilepsy maybe? It was a very bright day and we were walking through a lot of shadows…

I think you need more of an exam thsn this.

has she been on allot of hard feed????

azutoria or myopathy can cause muscle cramps etc.
I think you should ask for a blood test see if t this shows up anything .

I think you should ask your vet for a detailed exam .. My vets offer now A mot yearly one where they check everything for 100 pounds .

This doesn't sound right and personally I wouldn't let this go by without finding out what caused it .

How old is the horse??

My vet did perform a detailed examine but he didn't find anything wrong.
Nope, just grass.
My vet and I did everything we could to find out what had cause it but we could find anything. He told me to try and get it on video if it happened again so that he could see what was happening but it didn't happen again.
She was 6 or 7...

My groom has talked about a horse she cared for in the past that had narcolepsy It started a bit like that but thats a wild guess so dont worry to much.

Thanks, I was on the whole spectrum of worry when this first happened...my vet told me if it was something I needed to worry about it would keep happening and for 2 years she has been seizure free. I should also probably say that she never had a seizure before this and I’ve had her since she was 2 ½.

My mare has epilepsy and if you have only had one "seizure" in all that time, I really wouldn't worry about it!! I have heard of one case that was only triggered by walking in bright sunlight under trees which caused the sort of effect that can make human sufferers have seizures. There are lots of things that can look like seizures but aren't. Real seizures can be caused by a number of factors, and many turn out to be one-offs. I'd say forget it and be grateful :)

PM if you want to talk more.
