Self Harming Horse??

Is anyone else's horse like this at the moment??

In the last 4 weeks Lyla has twice cut her OSR leg (one needing antibiotics from vet and still ongoing treatment )

Asked the vet if she should wear boots for turnout? Vet was against it as mud cold track up inside the boot, rub and cause skin irritation. Fair enough (and I'd worry about over heating tendons yargen yargen)

But bloody horse has done it again today on the NSR

She is not normally clumsy, and yes the field is slippery in places (isn't everywhere? ) but it could be worse and although she can have her moments she's normally too busy eating to worry about having a hooly

Would you put boots on all round and ensure legs and boots are cleaned and dried after every use?

Am not a generally a fan of leg protection, but I can't let her go on like this?

My horse is a certified self harmer and has boots on every day all round when he's out. In 3 hours of being in the stable of them not being on he cut the back of his front leg with his diagonal hind getting up from resting... sigh!
The field he's in can get boggy and doesn't get mud between the boot and his skin or rubs. He has however gone through a few pairs... broken a front, eaten a hind one resulting in new boots all round!
I just use the Woof Wear Club boots they seem to be ok used all day.

a couple of years back mine was the exact same. went to bring him in one day and looked like he'd tried jumping barbed wire (couldnt find any in the field, still no idea how he did it) his back legs were all sliced up, and he has lots of pretty scars left...

after they healed a bit he got turned out into a paddock to stop the same thing happening again. nope, did it again even worse, ripped the skin off from the hock down, was like a big pocket, vet was stunned. enter 3 weeks box rest and plenty bandage changes, antibiotics etc.

still no idea how he did either of these. thankfully he didnt have anything major last year since the year before he fractured his leg. hope this continues! *touches wood*

i never boot him to turnout as he likes to play in the river and the skin would get irritated, only booted him once and that was when he got turned out after 5 months box rest due to his fracture. id keep her unbooted, and look around the field for anything she may have hurt herself on

I just made the field as safe as I could, and he grew out of it, especially as the work meant he got more coordinated and better balanced.

same as my boy! injuries always happened just before or when i was on holiday. another theory i had was that he was a junkie and loved getting doped by the vet haha
