Self-trimmers - Hoof Stand?

I had a big barefoot transition for my last horse, who was a mannerly RID. My trimmer taught me how to do a quick rasp in between trims. I now have a young wobbly cob who has fabulous quality feet, so I'm very hopeful he'll do well. I never needed a hoof stand, as my old horse was fine without. I think the new one might benefit from the support though... I was wondering if others had spent on the stand, which is a pretty eye watering ~£200. I feel it might give him more confidence and I can do some useful prep work to eventually mean he can be done by the farrier without me holding him if needed. Just wondered if others had found an alternative solution or if they found it worth the outlay? 😀

I bought a pair of axle stands thinking that would work - they need welding at whatever height you want, or someone to explain to me how to keep them extended with a slightly horrified and therefore twitchy horse. And they tip over easily (more horrifying) so ideally need to be secured to a bit of board. Easier, imo, to buy a proper stand.

Want some axle stands?

Arguably I miss it just for hoof stuff when I’m not trimming, or my back does. I sold it to I’m Dun and it was a bit bulky to keep with no horse.

I had modified the axle stand to have a rubber top etc but it had to have the balance totally right.

I'm not sure there is another solution. I have watched some buy cheap stands over the years but they are usually not very good and often for sale. I was lucky mine was for free, OH made it for me many years ago. However if I needed one now I would have to fork out for the hoof stand one.

Oh well, at least summer will be a good time to buy - as I'm saving on my hay and bedding at the moment! Good to know people have found it to be worth the cost. When you think it's pretty much the equivalent of 2 sets of shoes, it's not too bad. I'll just have to keep it somewhere secure.

I’m currently thinking that a hoof stand might help my 5 year old who has just been diagnosed with hock arthritis! She has been iffy with picking up her hind legs especially for farrier and has just been shod but sedated. I’m not sure whether to splash out on the more expensive one or go for the cheaper Kramer one🙈

I would choose the green one as I think it would be more awkward placing your own feet on the black one to steady it. if you watch this video at 1.31 it shows what I mean. (his feet)

I love this video! I wish I had seen this when I got my girl as a 2 year old who hadn’t had her hooves touched. I’m definitely getting one and I think she will appreciate it!💕

If anyone is looking for a hoofjack stand I have one for sale. I bought it a couple of years ago when I had a very unreliable farrier but obviously as soon as I got the stand I also found a more reliable farrier so have only used it once. It has the cradle for the back feet on but I have misplaced the rubber topped part for the front feet although I'm in the middle of decluttering to move yards so it may or may not turn up in the next couple of weeks 😂

Which one do you have?
