My OH and myself were talking yesterday and got onto the fact that my 3.5t box is rarely used - in fact it's mainly used for vets visits - I can count on the fingers of one hand the times I've had it out in the last twelve months. But I do want some form of transport. The box is nice and I could sell it for about £8k at least, looking at similar ones which are for sale of the same age for over £10k.
I currently drive an old Honda Civic - petrol and I get about 35mpg from it, sometimes less. My mileage is about 12-15000 per year as I don't use it for works mileage much now due to promotion at work. :D

We had a look at some Kia Sorrentos yesterday - towing capacity 2500kg. The most I would be towing would be one 16.2hh TB and a 14hh New Forest pony. I would be looking at something like a Bateson trailer.

So would it be more economical to get a diesel Sorrento and a trailer than keeping the box that I have ? I'm paying two lots of insurance, tax, mot, servicing etc
It won't be until later this year that we make the decision, but just trying to weigh up the pros and cons. I passed my test in 1990 so no issue with towing...
Thanks

the new Sorrento is very nice and probably ok for mpg.
have you space to hitch/unhitch and turn your trailer to park it if you are on your own? I have a trailer and have plenty of space to park it, but dont have the width to turn it in reverse to park it up. I have to do 1/2 turn in reverse, unhitch and push round a bit and then either push it the rest of the way back or hitch it again and finish. its also on pebble drive so I cant push on my own. without this issue I would much prefer the trailer to a box. But it's frustrating if I need to do anything on my own.
I have a freind who swapped a box for a trailer and again had issues in the space she had to turn and park up.
check this sort of thing out and if it works then go for it:)

12-15000 a year is a massive mileage if you don't use it for work, are you sure it's that high?

I would think a trailer would be a better option as your money is tied up in the lorry which you rarely use. Or even hire something when you need it.

ETA Have no idea why it is highlighting the mileage, not anything I've done lol

ETA2 now its not lol!

CHECK OUT THE MEMBERS VEHICLE AND TRAILER COMBINATION link in my signature below as over 60 have rated their set ups out of 10

That might give you some ideas

I sold my 7.5 tonne at the end of last year and got a trailer and a 4x4 instead. I'm glad I did. Would soon be lorry MOT time and I would be panicking about the cost. The main reason I had a lorry was I had 2 big horses. One was pts almost 2 years ago and my other has just retired. New pony only 15hh so easy to fit in a trailer.
