Sell him and get bigger or stick with my little man?

He is my first pony and my only pony, and i love him to bits. But i don't know if ive outgrown him not only in size but in ability and competitions if you get what i mean ( i can't quite find the right word). I have done dressage with him getting well into the 70's and some jumping but from the photo below hes not exactly built for jumping. Done the odd ODE but as he's only 13.2hh i cant do any BE events with him. If i sold him i would get a 16hh ish all rounder that i could begin to do BE with.
Now do i stick with my little superstar and wait till i get enough money to maybe have two if the debt after uni isnt through the roof or do i get a new one?

He looks great :) I'd sell him and let someone else enjoy him at the level you have, and move onwards & upwards. Ponies like that are in great demand so you shouldn't have any trouble finding him a good home.
 
Awww only you can answer this really? Can you bear to part with him? if no then can you afford 2 and have time to ride 2??

Hard decision, but I bet you know the answer, whats your gut feeling?? xx
 
it's totally up to you and if you think you could deal with it emotinally.

i've still got my first pony even though i am a little tall on her now. we still have fun and have a bond so i could not be without her. plus i wouldn't trust anyone to look after her considering the horror stories of today. not tarring all owners with the same brush of course but personally she is my superstar and is staying with me.
Though I do have two bigger horses to ride so i don't feel as if i am missing out on riding horses.. (and i just looove ponies!) :)
 
why get something then go to uni? far better to keep your little lad and have fun on him then after uni (if you still want to) get something bigger and maybe put your boy on loan to someone local so you can keep an eye on him..sounds like he would be suitable for a pony club home...
 
Aww, he looks awesome! Afraid this is a decision only you can make. You haven't outgrown his sizewise at all but it does depend on what you want to do. I also have a fell - difference is I bought him last year and I'm an adult, I really want to do a little bit of everything at local level but mainly I want to show so he's perfect for that. If you want to event then you may have to make the decision to let someone else enjoy him. You could always do M&M Workers if you want to jump him a bit more but at the end of the day it's not BE. On a plus point he looks like a cracking pony - I can't imagine you'll have problems selling him. :)
 
Cracking pony! First of all you don't look too big on him and I'm quite sure you're not too heavy. I can understand you wanting something bigger so you can do BE - I had a similar problem with our 14.2 show pony when my son outgrew her, as an adult I was unable to ride her in show classes, but we couldn't bear to sell her.

If you are going to Uni, why not wait until you've graduated before making any decision? Selling your first and best pony will be a lot harder than you think and a pony will be a lot cheaper to keep when you are a poverty stricken student!
 
Personally I don't think you look huge on him, after i sold my first pony I regretted it so much :(

I went through the motions on selling my 15hh, but when it cane to it I couldn't part with him. We kept him till the end of his days.

As previous poster, I would keep pony whilst at uni and then re-evaluate finances!
 
Can he clear 3ft consistently? if so why not try BE? he sounds like a star- you may struggle with time but if your dressage is really good who cares. You don't look to big for him.
 
awwww i don't think i could ever sell him like. I think i'll just hang onto him till after uni then maybe loan him out and get a bigger. He is a little superstar and has tought me sooooo much and i have great balance now due to my terrible saddle haha.

BE can wait.... :D
 
Stick with your little man!! He looks lovely and it sounds like you've been doing really well with him. Most heavier natives don't jump as well as that!
I agree with the others about seeing how things go when you finish uni - you never really know whats going to happen and it you have an eventer it will prob need more work as well as costing more to keep. Plus you definatly don't look too big.
By the way if I didn't have too many natives already I'd be saying the opposite then be first in the line to buy him!
 
Remember bigger is not always better, it's ability & willingness. You are not too big for him & would regret selling such a super pony. Riding Club allows older riders on ponies to jump at comps now. Enjoy what looks like a pony of a lifetime.
 
You aren't too big for him at all.
I'm 5ft2 maybe a bit over, and I frequently rode 11.2hh - 13hh ponies until recently. I looked a little tall on the 11.2hh's naturally.
But you've definitely not outgrown him.

It's all up to you.
The decision is basically, do you want to do BE or do you want to keep him?
 
I am a keeper, so probably biased ... I would keep him for now and continue enjoying him. During uni you probably won't have time or finance for BE anyway so you can continue enjoying him, doing unaff ODEs, etc .... Then if you can afford a second horse after uni, find yourself a nice little rider for your pony and know that he is safe and loved for life, whatever happens :)

Keep at the dressage - go up a few levels ... :D :D

and another. Don't forget that at Uni you can compete in the BUSA leagues on different horses at each competition. Practically every uni has an Equestrian society these days. Get some experience on the bigger horses and then you can decide if you want a bigger horse for sure. My lad is even smaller than yours, but I just couldn't part with him.

If you want to put him on loan I would be very interested.

As others have said, keep him while you do Uni then make the decision. You may find you don't have a lot of spare time with your studies to do BE properly.

don't rush into a decision that you may come to regret.

What part of the country are you?
