Selle Francais

My YO is a huge fan of the selle francais. Copy-pasted from his website as was too lazy to type it all out myself!!

"The Selle Francais is the epitome of what a sport horse should be, athletic, strong, good bone and muscle, intelligent with a tractable disposition. Primarily known for its excellence in show jumping, the versatile Selle Francais also excels in dressage and eventing.

Through an intensive and aggressive breeding program, the French breeders have over the past several decades, created this extraordinary breed by selectively crossing their sturdy native horses with Thoroughbred stallions. Judicious introduction of the French Anglo-Arab and French Trotter has added brilliance, agility and energy to the breed.

French sport horses have long been known for their superior jumping ability. The mixture of big-boned, solid and calm Normandy mares has been mixed over the decades with well-chosen English thoroughbreds to produce an elegant, poised and athletic animal whose intelligence and willingness will help any rider when negotiating a difficult course. their renown is world-wide."

Its the french warmblood. At one point you weren't allowed on the french national teams unless you were riding one, so they got good at breeding them. The are influenced a lot by TBs and Anglo Arabs.

They are also used a lot in KWPNs and other european WBs.

I have 2! When I start playing with the photo end of things around here I'll post a photo of "Incarna." He was bred from a Stallion called "Vitorio Silver," that belonged to the National Stud, Le Haras du Pin, down the road...

I really can't compare, since I began riding here in France, and almost always on a"Selle Francais." I did ride briefly, during some jumping lessons, earlier this year an AngloArab(also from the National Stud.) He was heaven to be with!

Apparently, they are more tempermental than the Dutch and German Horse, but this is only what I 've heard...

Grace has a lot of these in her breeding...

I have to admit to being a huge SF fan. Which is quite a good thing as I have 8 of them...
As jingledalton said, they are real people horses. On the whole they are very level headed, laid back and sensible. They have a canter to die for and a brilliant jump. The only thing I would say against them is they can look a bit 'common' as they are prone to having heavy heads.
However, there is a major down side. They are so friendly you will fall in love and never want to sell him or her. Well this is what has happened to me..!!

I would say the same as DeiselDog they are the French warmblood. I would therefore add that the type does vary depending on the breeding line, some of those gred for dressage would be somewhat heavier than those bred with eventing in mind.
My mare is a sweedish warmblood but the sire was SF & the dam Irish TB - if she had been bred in France she would probably be SF as it is she is SW.

My youngster Alee is a SF. I bought not knowing anything about them really other than they are a french WB.
She is definatly very clever and very bold. She has been very easy to train, although being strong minded has made her a llittle bit too inquisitve which can get her into a lot of trouble.
She is a real people horse and I really do love her to bits. We have good and bad days but think that is down to age not her breed.
