Up in the clouds
No, it certainly hasn't in the past.
A horse with tetanus is not a pretty sight. Providing protection from this dreadful disease has nothing to do with lining the vets pockets. It is basic management. It is also a vac we should think about for ourselves too, given the environment we work in with our horses.
Is that really what it costs to vaccinate? That's insane. I pay $15 for rabies, tet, WEE and EEE. I have to have the vet come for the first callout as he has to administer the rabies shot but the follow up second vaccinations (excl rabies) for tet, Wee and EEE I do myself a couple of weeks later. If I'm not doing rabies at that time then I just go and collect the vaccines myself and I pay cost, which works out to being around $25 for the course.Wouldn't put me off but I'd do my utmost best to get the price of starting&completing a whole course knocked off the purchase price. If you weren't able to share the vet visits with someone else (for whatever they needed vet for) you're certainly looking at a minimum of £150/200 for the course
Gee that's a lot of money then! Why don't you get the vaccines from the vet and do it yourself? It's very little for the vaccines themselves, it's the call out fees etc x 3 that add it up, really. I've not tallied up how much it costs, it's just something that needs doing so it gets done.
eta But my vet offers free callout for groups of 6 or more and I've always got that many, so that's good. (That's why I try to tie in the new horses with other callouts).
Can't. Need a vet stamp/siggy in the passport. I show affiliated so they need to be done, and be able to prove that they're done.
Totally agree with all of this. I have homebreds here, and wouldn't dream of doing them for flu, tetanus is another thing entirely. I have had several issues with reactions to flu jabs, including atrial fibrillation in my stallion, and he wasn't a youngster. I'm very wary of anything that interferes with a horse's immune system. My event homebred had to be vaccinated to compete BE, yet not once have I been asked for a check of her passport. During her first two flu vaccs, she came up in big odemas which took ages to go a way. Not happy!!To be honest I think it is absolute rot that if someone doesn't vaccinate they may neglect basic care!!
The only horses of ours done for flu are those out competing at a level where it is a requirement. If it were not none of them would be done! Tetanus I agree is a different matter though I have never heard of a horse in our area contracting the disease.
Incidentally not one of our local livery yards ask for horses to have a current vaccination cert.
