been looking for ages for new horse for daughter (had two bad experiences so far with dealers this year) anyway went to look at horse last night ad was in H&H. asked all the right questions on the phone. left work early drove for hour and half to the dirtiest yard i have ever seen. was not put of kept thinking i was looking at the horse only. took into see the horse not the prettiest but still not put of. asked why it had a big hole in its ear that had been badly stitched only to be told that stud who breed it put in numbers like cows have!!! . i went in to tack up got reins on but he would not open mouth then he spun around quick and bolted to back of stable, tried again no luck, daughter tried no luck, girl groom tried no luck she was petrified and full of excuses. the man who was the dealer was muttering all the time getting very angry. he then went to get bowl of food & head collar. now in the stable was groom feeding horse with head collar on and dealer trying to get bridle on while horse was running around stable. Eventually they got it on all lopsided mind you. horse was still not happy and i did not fancy my daughters chances on it. dealer said he did not have a rider despite groom riding another horse as i turned up. i then said we will not waste your time this horse is not for me, the dealer then threw the saddle on the floor and said get of my yard if you are calling me a liar!!!!. this horse has never done this before and only did it as it does not like men, well i said how comes all 3 females could not tack it up first, his reply was that he had brought it in from the field!!! i said my goodbyes and left.. I have looked in the mirror and i don't think i look stupid but who knows. Oh by the way as i was leaving girl groom asked what are you wanting to do we have some other nice horses.

Jeez, that's a bit scary!!

there are a lot of dealers like that, they always try to cover up big problems and some do manage it but it can be very dangerous, u made the right decision to leave it. however there are very good dealers out there

i have even put more pennies in the pot and the horses seem to be getting worse. i know the right one is out there, but when there is a 16yo daughter involved i will not take any chances. we are not novices but somee of the things i am experiencing make me feel that a novice would not stand a chance trying to buy something. must add though first time the dealer has been worse than the horse . i am starting to laugh a little know thanks everyone

i know emma and she is so honest. we went there the other week she only really had one that was suitable but it was a big stocky horse. my daughter is a tiny 16yo. but she is on the lookout for us

What type of horse are you looking for ie

age, height what discipline ??? x

we are looking for a 15.3h to 16.1. mare or gelding. 5yo to 8yo. my daughter has always done BSJA but as she is know at equine college, wants a good allrounder just to have some fun on. she likes forward going but not to heavy looking. she is not worried about putting in some work but would like the basics already there. i thought it would be easy. i never had this much problem finding good ponies to ride.

Whereabouts are you? I am friends with a dealer (who I can vouch is reputable!) who I have known for many years who specialises mainly in jumping horses. PM me for more details if you like.

In Essex? That's worrying, I'm going to try a pony in Essex on sunday

I found a dodgy dealer in Kent thru H&H - they advertise cheap horses every week. Bought an arab because I felt sorry for it as she was in bit of a state really, they said she was quiet to ride - hmmmm, me thinks not broken! When I sat on her at the dealers I think she was so shell shocked at what had happened to her she was too scared to do anything. Rode her bareback at the dealers as they strangely didn't have a saddle to fit her. Put a saddle on her at home & she bucked for Britain. Oh well, I have a nicely put together brood mare with a baby on the way for next spring & hopefully be able to restart her once the foal is weaned!

Tip - avoid dodgy dealers that are clearly gypsies offering safe family horses for around 1000. I should have known better!

Snap!!! i have a rather large mare due to foal beginning of april 2008.( 54" girth is about 6" to small we are planning to bring her back into work as she is only 11yo now. Good luck . probably see my foalie pics next year.

Why do these dealers waste everyone's time? Do they think anyone is taken in by it? Anyway, this one must have been REALLY stupid not to tack the thing up before you got there! Good job for you that he didn't but what a waste of everyone's time. Yes, I feel sorry for his horses too.
