Has anyone got any experiences of this?

I have been advised that I could sell my filly at York sales and actually make a better price in an auction than I would on a private sale. She is currently for sale for £3k and I have had no offers so my plan is to drop this price for a month and then consider the sales.

My worry is that I want her to go to a good home and there is no guarantee of this at the sales. Also, I think my view of horse sales is a bit archaic.

The other option is that I keep her, but for the cost of having her over the winter I could sell her for a song

I have her out and about at shows all over with a big 'for sale' note. She is lovely but noone is buying atm.

I go to most of the sales at York - because I work very close to Murton.

The horses that are selling don't seem to be making much money and with the current 'credit crunch' can't see it really improving.

Probably better sales than York for your filly. Good luck finding her a good home

Well I don't know if York sales are specialist sales?

But the other sales I've been to the horses would normally make more private I think.

If your worried about where she will end up I'd stick with the private sale.

Good luck.

I can't comment about the York sales as I have no idea what they are like/what type(s) of horses are sold there but someone I know was so desperate to sell her TB recently that she took him to Reading sales. She got £700 for him but he should really have sold for something like £2k . . . . .

ouch! scratch that idea then!

JM07 - I will look at Brightwells - anyone else know any specialist horse sales near Yorkshire though?

Thanks for the advice all

I would agree re Brightwells for a nicely-bred sports horse, at least you'd get the right type of potential buyer. Their next sale is at the beginning of August but entries for it have now closed. I've been thinking of taking my filly there next year (she'll be 2 then) or even the year after if I don't have any joy selling her privately.

I had exactly the same view of sales as yours, until I went to Brightwells sale at Malvern a few years ago. It's possibly too far from you but their Sept Festival of the horse sale is very good. You get serious buyers and horses and youngstock usually sell very well there.
