When advertising a horse with Sarcoids would you put in the ad that he has sarcoids or do you wait till someone rings & how much do sarcoids reflect on the price of the horse.

He has a few small sarcoids around his sheath which haven't changed since i've had him. I have been advised not to have them treated at this moment in time. He did have a very large one on his ear but that has so far been successfully removed by laser surgery.

How would you sell a horse with sarcoids?

TBH I've just successfully treated my horse with 2 x tubs of global herbs sarc-ex, so whilst I would rather not buy a horse with sarcoids, it wouldn't make or break it for me I don't think. In terms of price reduction, I don't know. I guess it depends on the horse's value i.e. is it £1000 or £6000 (depends what he's done, age etc).

Personally i would not put it in the Advert but would most definately tell people when they rang about him.
Unfortunately it does put a lot of people off....
My mare developed a sarcoid after i had brought her and had a successful operation to remove and have cisplatin beads implanted. I would have thought twice about going to view her if i knew she had a sarcoid then :( glad she developed it after.....best horse i have ever owned :)

I think you have a duty to declare and on the advert. Some of us who have had a bad experience would not entertain again but equally I am very well aware certain types may not cause any long term issues and are best left or simply treated so probably a good idea to say what type and if caused no probs at all or what treatment had. I think it also devalues them if surgery has been needed but if the horse is doing its job and well the majority of people would probably be happy to take a chance. Good luck with your sale, it sounds from what you say that your horses would not pose a problem to most :-)

He's 7 year old Cleveland bay. He's not done a lot but he can do a bit of everything, if that makes sense. He's a quite boy, fab to hack, good in the school. Good weight carrier. I want to sell him because I have two young kids & I'm finding it hard to find time for him. He's on loan to an equine college at the moment. Which works well. I've had a few calls for him & It's always the first thing I tell them about him. They usually say thanks for being honest but they're not interested. I've advertised for £2100. Is that to much?

I would be up front and honest and put it in the advert. If they don't want a horse with sarcoids it's only fair that they find out from the advert rather than wasting time and money ringing you up.

I don't think you're asking too much though.

My vet prescribed me some Efudix cream, that's for human use as well. We used that a the side of his face, although the vet said he couldn't be sure that it was a sarcoid. It looked just like a rub mark from his bridle. But it worked on that & his hair has grown back now. He said I could use it on others around his sheath. But I thought seen as Dr Knottenbelt advised againest treatment at the moment that it would be best to leave them.

I'd put it in the advert. They don't put me off at all, but it will save timewasters that ring and decide they don't want one with sarcoids :-)

Sorry, how can someone who doesnt want a horse with sarcoids be a time waster! Especially if it isnt declared in the advert.

I say def mention the sarcoids in the ad. Saves a lot of time for both parties. It really annoys me when your trawling through adverts trying to spot when that actually looks half decent. You find one, get a little excited, you call to find out it has x and x and x wrong with it. It is very deflating!

Haha well my boy is up for sale, it is stated in the advert, and I still have had people come to view him and then say theyre not interested as he has a sarcoid! its not even active!

Fany had 2 when we bought her. The nodule type, it did not put me off at all and now 2 and a half years later one has disappeared completely and the other has never changed. I think it may depend on the type and what the vet says.

I'd put it in the ad,alot of people won't be put off by sarcoids. However,if like me someone's had a bad experience with them & vowed never to have a horse with sarcoids again it'll save them making the phone call.

I sold a horse last year with sarcoids on his sheath. I clearly stated it on the ad and although did not get many calls, the ones that did were all serious buyers and he sold to the 2nd viewer.

The lady that bought him didn't bother having him vetted. He was an older all rounder with BS winnings and had so much to offer I imagine she thought he was worth the risk.

I went to visit him this summer and the sarcoids had not changed and have caused no issues for his new owner.

Good luck!

I also suppose it depends where they are? I have a horse who has a few on his chest (which makes a martingale difficult, as they rub them) Now that the flies are less, they are calming down - would be interested in hearing advice on preps etc. to get rid / calm down.
I am not sure I would buy a horse that I knew had them, if I could choose from a selection that did not.....The worry is always will they spread - and I dont know enough about the cause / type to have an educated view. Do others?
