Can anyone please advise on the best way to sell my dressage saddle. I’ve put it on eBay but only seem to attract scammers. I’m happy to go below £500 in order to get it sold. Any recommendations would be gratefully received.

I did three on FB marketplace. Older ones got less scammers and went pretty quickly. I only take payment by paypal G&S and send parcelforce tracked.

The virtually new premier equine dressage saddle (17" if anyone interested!) was a complete scammer magnet. I took the advert down in the end.

I've also used preloved before but put the same saddles up there this time and got zero interest.

Just beware of eBay’s selling fees eating into your return. They’re steep unless you got some bargain listing offer? I posted a thread about it recently. Ended up selling the saddle locally though Facebook marketplace in the end. I did initially have a lot of scammers, but they disappeared as soon as I mentioned only taking cash on collection.

If you sell on eBay you can check the sold prices of similar listings to see if things are within the range you are comfortable with. Or just put up a reserve price and ignore any low-ball messages.

I sold two in that kind of price range via Saddles Direct - they were easy to deal with and arranged the courier collection (you pay for it). Took about six months to sell and as others have already said, these places take a commission, but for me that was a trade I was willing to make for no hassle.

EBay with a buy it now price but only when there are 80% off sale fees or FB marketplace. Never failed to sell anything at the right price with good photos and description. Also never had scammers.

If you do decide to go with EBay I'd just reiterate advice already given on here re. commission & fees etc.

I have sold a couple of saddles via our local second-hand tack-shop. She charges £20 to do the Listing and then you pay a straight 20% commission when the item is sold. So obviously you need to price the item so that you get enough £££ back from it. The advantage with this is that (1) you don't have all the faff of packing something up to send on Ebay plus the worry of it going missing/being damaged in transit, in which case YOU as seller will end up paying out; and (2) once it's sold, it's sold. End of. I say this because I sold a nice little saddle privately using Preloved. It was a treeless saddle of a certain make which are hand-made here in Devon and if you know how nice they are, then you "know" if that makes sense. Anyway this woman came and said yes she'd like the saddle please, just what we need she said. Do you want to sit in it said I? No thanks she said, we know this brand of saddle, have had one before, so no worries. We'll put it on the pony as soon as we get home and if it doesn't fit may we return it, but nope we don't need to sit in it.

So she paid cash and everyone happy, and off she went. SIX MONTHS later I had contact from her. Oh dear the saddle you sold me doesn't fit she said. Oh dear I said. I want a refund she said. Sorry I said but I did give you the chance if you recall to sit in the saddle before you bought it but you declined, and also I understood you were going to try it on the pony as soon as you got home. Oh but it doesn't fit the pony she said. Well sorry I said but I thought you were going to try it on the pony that very evening and if not a good fit bring it back. Oh well we've only just got round to putting it on the pony now she said and it doesn't fit. I told her essentially to trot on...........

I had a saddle listed on FB marketplace and it attracted two scammers (possibly same person, different names). No other interest so have added to eBay. Have sold a cheap saddle on eBay before and it seemed straight forward at the time.
I believe if you don’t go directly through saddle sellers you will always attract the unsavoury chancers but that seems to be the cost of doing business these days

I've now sold 3 on FB (so long as the latest isn't some form of advanced scammer anyway)

It takes a while and patience while you weed out the obvious scams but if they are priced right they sell.

I think the super expensive ones are less likely to sell that way. My more expensive one will go to the saddle bank I think.

I have sold four saddles on Facebook Market place, I won't post anything and make it clear on my ad that its cash on collection only. It cuts out the scammers. In all four cases I just looked at the prices for the saddles being sold on Ebay and FB and then priced a bit lower. I sold three saddles within a month, and a pessoa saddle sat on FB ffor a bit longer before it sold. Take good pictures, and just wait. If you need the space and are happy to loose a bit to commission, go with Saddle Bank or Saddles Direct. Know of people who have had good success with them.

Saddle bank - I have sold 2 through them - was very untraumatic! So easy.
They never seemed to want what I had. Older Ideal, virtually unused Kieffer and a Black Country which fell between the 2 in terms of age and condition.

I had better luck with a saddler that sells second hand.
