My friend has had the worst year ever and now is selling her horse.
Cleo is a 16hh, 12 yrs, hanovarian mare. Has bred 3 foals in past.

She is Gyanors first horse, when I mean first I mean NEVER sat on a horse or looked after one before. She won some compenstaion and decided to buy a horse (dont start, I know)

The first day she had her, about 2hours after unloading her she decided to go for a hack, by herself (yes I know!)
a few months after this she had a serious op and was out the saddle for 4 months, when the doc gave her the all clear she went down tacked cleo up and went on a hack. Cleo was an angel even after 4 months of just eating.

anyway Cleo has taught Gaynor to ride, and she has just started to canter. not bad concidering she didnt even bother with lessons (no this isnt a mad night mare of how NOT to do things, its real life!)

When i ride Cleo, she comes down onto the bit, moves off from the leg, has lovely soft mouth, jumps lovely does XC, hack out nicley, good to show, box, catch etc only thing we dont know is clipping as we have never done this.

basicly a nice all round riding club type horse who is fat, unfit and not brilliantly schooled

question is a how much. thing is Cleo is a boomproof ideal 1st horse, and good riding club as well. however as previosly stated she is a bit poddy (coverts thin air into calories) and you couldnt go off and do a dressge test tomorrow, although Im amazed at how well schooled she still is after 18months of beginners riding her.

im thinking 3k ?

she is only for sale as gaynor is a single mum with 4 kids, and cant cope anymore.

3k sounds about right, depending on how expensive the saddle is i would perhaps add just a little more, as a safe horse like that is worth its weight in gold and as she has bred foals and is a fairly popular breed, she sounds very nice indeed, i am sure your friend wont have any trouble selling her

Truly bombproof first horses that can go up a gear when required are rare. Rarely still are such horses in a nice upstanding (rather than smaller and hairy) body. Because of that, they can quite reasonably command a premium. I'd say emphasize her ideal first horse breeding and the fact that she will be able to do more if a riders improves and wants more - and advertise her for £4500 or even £4995 with a view to taking a few hundred less. She is the type that is truly 'hard to find' as they say. The market you are aiming at will value her more than £3000 in todays market

as she has done nothing of interest, i'd say £1800

[/ QUOTE ] I horse suitable for a beginner or a nervious novice, tends to be worth more than those that have 'done something' unless we're talking higher level stuff. This is because for that kind of riders suitable horses are few and far between!

Absolutely agree Stella, safe on the roads and able and willing to adapt to experienced rider as well. This is just what we are looking for, and trust me they are like hens teeth.

Sounds like a lovely mare - only thing I would warn against is setlling her as bombproof. You say yourself she's not fit - some horses have a habit of completely changing when they get fit!

Sorry - can double this. She sounds worth her weight in gold. People will pay a fortune for a safe, sane, sound horse.

Horses don't have to have 'done something interesting' to be worth a bit of money.

What we are looking for too, and they are pretty rare. I am budgeting £3-4K. I think the max I would go to, though impossible to say as not seen her, would be about £3500 if she was perfect when you went to see her and if no tack,rugs..etc included. I would not go above £3500k due to podge/fitness.
