Been doing a lot of thinking lately, very painful I know! But, I have come to the decision to sell Dolly the Trolley.
Bless her, she hasn't done anything wrong but she has been keeping Twiggy company since June last year, I haven't ridden her and to tell the truth, haven't missed it that much so seeing as I already have Twiggy plus Bea for a year, I really don't need or can afford another brood mare so it seems sad to waste her when she could be having fun or becoming a mum for someone else. In hind sight, I shouldn't have bought her but there you are, mistake made although I don't regret it!

So, questions for you, hopefully ideas for me!

Would it be better to leave her in her natural state - although cleaned up ( coat like a yak, mane and tail sprouting and feathers almost grown to their full delight, fuller than they are in this pic) in case people want her as a traditional, or clip her out, possibly hog her, even though someone might only want her as a brood mare?

What do you think please?

Or any other suggestions?!

Thanks in advance!

Hard to answer, I'm assuming she isn't in foal again?
I would hesitate to clip her if she is going as a brood mare, but if you plan to ell her as a ridden horse at least tidy her up, say legs and pull her mane (oh traditionals have full manes don't they, scrub that bit!)
I would take a good look and decide what to sel her as then clip/trim her accordingly...
I've had a lot of success with horsemart but little with horsequest if that helps.

No, she's not in foal - the only empty thing about her, she's like a barrel atm!

Am glad you're all saying leave her, I can't even get my fingers down to her skin, lord knows what clippers would tackle that coat!!

I'd rather sell her from the field than have to bring her back into work tbh, don't want to enjoy riding her again and change my mind!

Also, is it worth selling her with tack and rugs or not, can't see me needing 6'9" again?

Even m&m should be lightly pulling, so def tidy her mane... trim her up ears etc.... Lots of grooming. I would leave her feathers and furry because we clip them to work them not to look pretty. Maybe wait a month or two then sell in earlie spring? Nt a believer in time year stuff but for the type buyer might be better once springed up!

Yes, planning on leaving it until mid March else we'll still be waterlogged and they won't even see the bottom of her feet let alone the colour of her feathers although I might try one of the free sites beforehand like Simply Horses just to test the water!

she is lovely! one thing to consider is that some people may not want to take on an overweight broodmare (assuming she is like a barrel as you say) so it may be worth going on a little diet if thats what you want to advertise her as.

I recently sold my mare as a broodmare and they have said because she was so fat (oops!) they need to get the weight off her first before breeding.

I would just clean her up, sort out any unsightly or wild bits and leave it at that, dont hog her is she may be out when she is sold.

OOOOOH, MFH, i have always loved Dolly!! unfortuanately, i already have far too much on my plate! and her mini-me wouldent be too impressed by her presence either i shouldent think! all the best with selling her, she's a babe

If I lived closer to you and was rich... She's lovely.

I wouldn't hog her. Anyone that wanted her as a ridden cob would be able to see past her mane/feathers if they wanted to clip her. Think she looks pretty they way she is.

How big is she Pat? She must be bigger than I thought to be in 6ft 9 rugs.

PMSL! She's a very busty lady, probably a double W which takes it all up! A 6'9" fits her bust but dangles over the backend, looks like she's an old jousting horse but any smaller is a bit tight at the front! She's 15.2 ish! Think she might be a bit too wide for your pelvis trouble though, sad to say - and she would hate schooling, definitely not her thing!

I see why the name Dolly (as in Parton) is appropriate then.

I would ideally love another horse for Duncan in the future to enjoy hacking and so Harley could join me. It'd be fun.

I don't think you'll have any problem selling a babe like her.

pmsl...will she fit in my handbag? You could always loan her for a year whilst you have Bea if it's just the economics of having so many. Then take her back to breed from yourself next time?

Anyway...why is it you and me seem to be burning the midnight oil alot these days? Did you get my pm the other night about the purchase I backed out of?

claps hand to mouth -ohhhh!!

I promise I'll answer it tomorrow sometime; can't say I'm surprised you didn't though, I probably would have been the same!!

Good idea about loaning Dolly out too - and she has already had foals (not with me) so shouldn't be any problems there!

I need a nice mini cob if I'm going to buy anything, 13.2 and sell Talis. Didn't need two Section B's. It's my goal though one day to get a gentle horse for Duncan. He might as well join me and get saddle sores of the equine variety than of the bicycle one! (he sometimes joins me on hacks at weekends on his pushbike)

Ah well. Dolly is my sort of horse these days. Far more predictable than hot head breeds. I think I've convinced Hannah to go for a best friend type of pony, not a showy one next time. One she can have fun on. Less High Maintenance in the attitude department.

Dolly's quite a looker in a summer dress isn't she? Shame you don't get chance to ride her.

There are people out there who will want her - assuming she is a good steady ride.

I have just found an excellent home for my friend's horse - she is very similar but is 22. She is going with all her tack and rugs on permanent loan as he can no longer afford to keep her.

They are keeping her all hairy - though she looks smashing hogged out.

Personally leave her hairy - if someone wants a hogged, clipped out horse they can do it but you cannot quickly but the hair back. I would also offer tack and rugs in the price especially if she is the sort for a first time/novice buyer.

Good luck, she looks a lovely girl.
