Just seen an ad for an 18 month old golden lab who has finished a season picking up, app very quiet. Is it normal to sell that type of dog on? Seeing as so many dogs round here have been stolen I'm a tad over suspicious!

I guess it depends as they might be genuine but equally could be missing telling something in the ad..like the dog is too quiet & not great/what its expected to be..did something wrong &they don't want to continue training..I have heard of a guy who claims himself to be the worlds best gundog trainer & he is always looking for people to have bitches he owns at home, so that he can breed from & they go back to him for that bit then back to the owners-in my eyes like a puppy farm on an under cover scale..apparently they pay for the privilage. He was selling young pups at a price.. tho trained dogs, 6/12/18 months..some even 4 yrs at massively inflated prices..add 3 zeros.

I would probably have a look on dog lost, perhaps if something similar then fwd the advert..we can't be too careful as you say & if my dog had been stolen i would be incredibly grateful for every lead to finding it..even if a few lost leads on the way. All these awful things happening lately with those transit vans being circulated, I totally understand why you are suspicious..I would be too

Yes it is normal for gundogs to be sold at any age, though often sold by people who field trial and the dog may not make the grade.

It is right to be suspicious, but if the seller has all the relevant paperwork it wouldn't put me off. Also the vast majority of gundogs are microchipped which helps with traceability.

Do your research, and you could always ring the keeper of the shoot that the dog was worked at to confirm suitability.

It doesn't seem normal to advertise that type of dog in the local free rag. It is quite common for gundog trainers to sell them at that age though. A trained gun dog that has had a successful shooting season is worth £1000+ . How much is the lab advertised for? If less than £1000 I would be suspicious.

Firstly, there's no such dog as a "Golden" Lab, they're "Yellow", and yes , it matters. Those who would advertise any Lab as Golden, would raise an eyebrow. Were the same dog in the Free-Ads, it would raise the other eyebrow! Were I to trust my own judgement, then yes, I'd probably have a look at him, if a "Yellow" Lab was what wanted, which it isn't.

Alec.

Good point, I don't know gundog people wouldn't say Golden Lab because as Alec said, it does not exist.

People do sell part-trained dogs in my own sport, but the good ones would never be for sale in free papers or free ad sites.

Usually its people who have bred or trained would sell on at that age.
However not in local free rag usually in shooting mags or by word of mouth. My trainer regularly sells springers.
I would be suspicious, but it may be an honest person who has decided shooting isn't for them!
If all paper is order and dog checks out with microchip-usually gun dogs are chipped as no collars worn when shooting therefore need traceability.

It would be normal to sell a gundog of that age, either it wasnt fast and stylish enough for trials, or has a fault which would eliminate it, like whining (but it could still make a good working gundog), or maybe they ran 2 pups on and kept the one they liked best, or any number of reasons.
The thing that would puzzle me is they call in 'Golden' not yellow, and also very few yellow labs are used for working nowadays.
Maybe someone who was new to the game thought theyd like to train their own dog, and bought a show-bred one, it wasnt fast or good enough so theyr selling it to get a better-bred one.
A bit suspicious, but not TOO suspicious
