I have had my horse 2 years and love him to bits but he just will not jump he is only six so four when I got him we have spent 2 years trying to get him to jump. He flys XC but SJ he just stops even a pole on the ground took me 10 mins today to go over a pole, I just sit still till he goes! Some days he will come out and fly a round but other days can take 20 mins to get going.

I would love to jump and maybe BSJA so should I sel lhim and get something that will jump as dont feel its fair on him or me

He is perfect in every other way

If you bought him with jumping in mind and he doesnt, then he isn't the horse you need him to be, and as such he should be sold and replaced with a horse that can and does jump.
He will be someone's perfect horse, he just doesnt sound like YOUR perfect horse.

I would sell him. If you want to jump and he doesnt then its not the right partnership.
As joanne said he isnt your perfect horse but he will be someone elses

If he isn't doing the job you want him to do, you have three options, either:

a) Persist with schooling and continue with something he doesn't apparently enjoy.
b) Change your direction and do what he is good at
c) Take up dressage.

Don't feel guilty if you decide to part with him, he will suit someone else down to the ground no doubt, horses are for enjoying, they are too expensive to do otherwise. :)

I'd sell him on as possible hunter.
this sounds do-able if he'll fly round cross country. maybe you should take him out on a hunt before you sell to see what he's like, as if he's brill then he may attract a lot of attention! people are always looking for good hunting horses.

Thats really sad, have you had the usual checks done? Saddle, back and teeth? It sounds a little bit odd that he doesn't mind jumping x-country, but won't go over a pole? I just wonder if its to do with speed and momentum?

If you really want to jump and he just doesn't want to then I agree with the other posters, he's just not the horse for you.. :(

If you love him and would prefer he jumped then sell him I would recommend taking him hunting as it normally sorts out jumping issues.

Like others said though if he isn't jumping (some of them just don't) your better cutting your losses and selling up. Has he got good flatwork as you could sell him as a dressage horse?

try loose jumping him, it may give him a bit of fun without to much pressure, it worked for my old welsh cob, used to loose jump the day before a comp and it really got him geared up for it.

I've a pony that loves XC but had to be led into a showjumping ring, then he'd just go flat out around all the jumps basically I think to get them over with.

I bought him as a 4 year old and he is now 22 and still hates show jumps though he will pop over the odd jump in an arena.

As your horse is only 6 years old he is still very young but as you want a horse to show jump and to a high standard not just the local gymkhana then I agree, sell him on.

If you have grown attached I can understand the reluctance to sell as I have another that I am dithering over on selling and at the moment have advertised him to go on loan.

You need to think hard about what you want and what is best for you and your horse. I mean it would not be fair to force him to jump show jumps if he does not enjoy it.

weird! mine will SJ but will only XC very cautiously.! If he's not right for you then there is no point in keeping him - no fun for either of you.

Just a thought - will he jump rustics in a school? hunting idea is a good one. Just wondered if there could be something odd with his vision if he doesn't like coloured poles or lacks confidence to jump patterned/coloured fences. Good luck in whatever you choose to do.

I wonder what he'd make of jumpcross? It would be interesting to find out if it is the style of fence or the setting.

If it's not working you shouldn't feel guilty about selling him. He will be right for someone else.

you bought him as a 4 yr old so presuming recently broken. did you teach him to jump? or had he jumped when you got him? does he do trot poles and canter poles? on the lunge and ridden? do you have a pole phobia? etc etc. yes i would hunt him, xc him fun ride him and continue to spoon feedhim in the menage and at home over sjs,. Good luck, personally i would persevere for 8 weeks planned programme with a good instructor. if failing after that i would hound exercise, cub and hunt and sell to his preferences!
