Selling horses with affiliated records

I've just been browsing through horses for sale ads online (as you do when you're "working from home", Ahem!!) and can't believe the number of people who tell outright lies. Do they not realise that you can check EVERYTHING online now? If you say your horse is "confidently jumping BE novice" I can check his record and see the fence where he got eliminated, including photographs of the owl hole in question! And that you retired after two attempts at a double of skinnies at another event. "Consistently low dressage BE" isn't one sub-30 and seven x 38!!
OK, so, many people see their horse through rose tinted glasses but a lot of pros are as guilty as the amateurs. Many of the horses in question aren't exactly cheap so, if you want to brag about his record, make sure reality matches your gushing description.
Does this wind anyone else up or is it just me?
 
I just find it highly amusing.

That said, records are the devils work. They don't always reflect a horses true capability (and that goes for both ways)
 
It does make me laugh and wonder if they're stupid, or they think everyone else is. Everyone is allowed an off day but some of the records are consistently awful, yet the horse is described as a schoolmaster or Intermediate prospect when it struggles to go double clear BE100.
 
I saw an ad recently for a horse described as an experienced event horse up to novice. I looked it up and saw that the horse did ok in one Novice and 2 BE100s in 2015 ago then had 2 eliminations at BE 90 with the same rider in early 2016 and has not competed since. Clearly a story there somewhere! People clearly think people are stupid. Having said that, a friend of mine did not know you could look up a BE record and bought a horse without checking his. So I guess they get away with it often enough to make it worthwhile.

A little story - a good friend of mine bought an Irish horse to play with and sell on.
My friend who I have great respect for and is very experienced with horses is a real amateur at eventing. She suffers from nerves and has the same financial constraints the majority of her peers need to deal with. Said horse was an utter saint. You could miss him all day long and he would keep going with a smile on his face. He got round a few 90's and a 100, but not with a clean record by any stretch. We knew how good he was, and he genuinely was a schoolmaster type with scope for certainly novice if not intermediate. Yet if you googled his record and photos you probably wouldn't go to view. This year the time had arrived to sell, under advice a pro rode this horse around 4 events with top 3 placings each time. The horse has just sold for a high sum and there were 2 interested parties trying to get the deal done.

The thing about records is you have to evaluate who is on top. That horse was a gem

Equally we sold a horse a couple of years back with a pretty immaculate record up to 1*. Could we sell the begger? Not easily - it took months and that is because he was quite a tricky ride albeit genuine. He eventually sold for approx 1/3rd the price of the above!

How do you get to see the photo of the fence? There’s not a link via BE is there or are you doing a bit of digging?
That besides I totally agree with you, it’s very easy to check things out with a little work.

Wow that is some wishful thinking!

I love checking up peoples records, but never maliciously, just nosey I guess! Especially if i've had a bad day I like to remind myself that i'm not the only one!

I dread to think what people would make of my horses very limited record :d a 40XC, a win, and an E! :D :D Shes acctually fairly consistent and just happens that her 2 bad days were both BE, looks like a different horse on BDWP!

Shoestring eventing have photos of most of the affiliated courses! I'm guessing this is how OP found them, it's certainly how I would!
 
IHW hits the nail on the head. Had I managed to do anything affiliated with my horse it wouldn’t be very exciting yet he has a good record with others riders. It’s me that’s the muppet not him. Yes it’s good to check up on but it’s not always the whole story!

Yes, you can look on bdwp for the fence where the horse had a stop/got eliminated/retired and see the photo on Shoestring eventing. It gives you an idea if the horse has a few issues with a particular type of fence
