My mare had her vet check this week and we found out that she might not recover enough to be ridden. After nearly a year of rehab I was hoping to get the green light for putting her back into work, and I am feeling rather crushed and confused at the moment. She is a very well bred WB and I always hoped to breed from her myself one day, but I was hoping to ride her for many years first. So I am wondering whether to sell.

I am not even sure that selling/loaning is an option in the current market, so I wanted to ask you:

What do you think my chances are for finding her a kind, experienced home as a broodmare, either on loan or sale?

She is an unproven, 15.2h 5 yo maiden. She had a bad kick in the field as a 4yo which is why I am considering retiring her as a broodmare, apart from that she has not had any health issues. She is a pink papered British bred warmblood, good confirmation, bred for SJ.

You could probably get her sold as a broodmare but maybe not for as much as you want/hope.
At 5yr old its not to big an issue that she is maiden.

Now that you cant ride her would you not consider breeding from her yourself just now? (although IMO to late in the year to cover this year)

TBH we're not a nation short of horses, even well-bred youngsters, at the moment. Yes, things may pick up but I'm not sure you'd find yourself making a lot from a foal, and nor would anyone else. If she can't be ridden perhaps consider retirement livery/companionship for her and sharing or loaning something for you to ride?

I am just thinking through my options right now. Breeding from her myself next year is an option, however the timing isn't that good. I do not have my own land and right now would prefer to only have 1 horse, and ideally one that I can ride.

I haven't got a clue what would be a realistic price, but in principle would rather pts than sell for a very low price and risk her being passed around.

I think I would prefer to either sell for a decent price to a serious breeder, or loan her to one, to make sure she went to a good home :-(

Thank you Tickles. If I were to breed from her myself I think it would only be to keep for myself.

Do you think the market is full of broodmares at the moment - even well bred ones? (She is by Cevin z out of a Concorde mare by the way) It seems a bit of a waste to send her to a retirement livery.
