As above really, I have got someone coming to look at my trailer this afternoon who will take it there and then if he wants it, paying cash.

Any scams / tricks I should be aware of? My Dad and husband will be there but I think we are all a bit clueless on these things!

Never sold anything of value before!

The golden rule really is don't let the stranger drive off with the trailer to 'test' it etc without getting the money!

Be careful of tyre kickers who say it's not as described and try and knock money off for that reason. If you've been honest in your advert there should be no reason for this - some people try it because the seller was expecting cash/get rid of the trailer and having made the decision to sell, wants the deal done. Just say no, if you've been honest and agreed a price!

Be wary of folk who want to use your loo in case they swipe something! Although that's very cynical on my part, I was told to watch this by someone with a shady past.

Count the money twice.

Write a receipt twice, you both sign both, they get a copy, you get a copy.

Thank you for the advice.

I'm note really sure what to do about the test driving aspect - do people normally test drive second hand trailers?

I suppose one of us would have to go in their car with them if they wanted to, but that would be a bit scary!

Oh I'm rubbish at this kind of thing!

I wouldn't allow a test drive, and I don't think it's the usual 'done thing'. You can say no on the basis of insurance. Once the trailer is theirs, if they want to run around uninsured, that's up to them - but if the trailer is yours and something goes wrong, you'd lose your asset.

So I'd say no, don't feel uncomfortable about it!

As said, don't allow it to be hitched to their vehicle before the cash is in your hand. We have never test driven a trailer although, when buying, if it is sold in working condition we do like to see that the electrics etc work.

If they want a receipt, state 'Sold as seen" and get a copy for yourself signed. I always have Receipts /Bill of Sale filled out and waiting.

Count your cash, shake hands and wave goodbye. :D

A above, but don't over worry - not everyone who comes to buy things is a crook..

Some trailers (Ifors for example) have log books/data tags - have a look at your documents to see if you need to send anything off as transfer of ownership, or have them sign anything..

Make sure the receipt is dated and the time put on.
I personally wouldnt do the 'sold as seen' part anymore- its no longer valid under the Sales of Goods Act.

I should know, i bought a 8k car from a garage who thought those 3 little words would get them off the hook.. they ended up giving my money back and paying all the court fee's.

Well the people came and were lovely, so I feel bad for worrying that they would be anything else!

Was actually sad to see my trailer go, had some good times! Excited to get new trailer though :-)
