I have been asked to school on and help sell a horse for a friend, which involves schooling him 3 times a week and for buyers when advertised. Not sure how much I should be asking for? Hourly rate or commission on sale?

He is a lovely coloured horse which I do enjoy riding, so not too much of a chore.

Anyone else have experience of this???

I suspect that financially you'd be better off charging an hourly rate for the schooling, but then agree a percentage of the sale...

i've done this before and as it was a friend it was £10/ride and 5% of sale price.

he sold within a fortnight so worked very well.

I did very similar to the above only the horse was on my yard due to the owner being a very busy doctor working shifts so she couldnt easily answer phone enquiries or show the horse off. I charged £10 a day full grass livery so a daily ride, my tel number on advert and i showed the horse to buyers. The horse spent a month at my yard for schooling and so i could really get a feel for her (to make sure she went to the right home). I only advertised her once and the 4th person to try her paid the asking price so owner was delighted. i got 5% of sale price.

Be aware that if you are doing all the work to sell, the extras do add up. You may have to spend time trimming / pulling / grooming and generally making him pretty enough to be shown to people. You have to factor in your time talking to people on the phone about him and the time for each visit when they come to see him, including any that don't turn up or cancel.

I have mine in sales livery and pay £150/week livery, for which they school him daily, they are also getting him fit, they are taking him to shows, keeping him pretty, showing him to buyers and doing all the advertising. They will also take 10% of the sale price.

If she's willing to pay by the hour, make sure you keep a record of all the time you spend on him doing all the above as well as riding, and show her how it all breaks down. You may be willing to do some of it as a favour for a friend though.

Thanks for the above, I have agreed a % of final sale in exchange for schooling the horse 3 times a week. Horse will be brought to my yard and tacked up ready.

He is very good so quite looking forward to it!!
