Hi all, I have a litter of Parson Russell Terriers, bred from our two pets. I have the litter advertised on the Kennel Club site and have been emailed by a man. I have sent photos. Usually I then expect a phone call and people come to view, however he has replied that he lives in Holland and will be coming on March 7th to collect said pup (by train, we are in Yorkshire)

I feel a bit uncomfortable about this, not sure whether to tell him no? That's a long journey. Pup will be 9 weeks and have had first injection

What would you do?

Unless things have changed recently, at 9 weeks the pup won't be old enough for a rabies vaccination and pet passport , so I would definitely be wary. Tbh I wouldn't even sell a puppy to someone in this country who wanted to just come and collect without visiting previously to view puppy , parents etc, and more importantly give me a chance to meet the prospective owners. I think you are right to feel uncomfortable and in your place I would be saying no.

ETS. I have just looked and it would seem pups don't need a rabies vaccine from UK to Holland, but despite this I would still be reluctant to sell unless I had already met purchaser.

Pet passport is needed so pup has to be 15 weeks to travel. Is the buyer coming to Crufts? 7th is terrier day so most exhibitors will be there. seems a bit strange.

The rules have changed to be compliant with most of Europe...see dec 2014

Your pup will need to be rabies vacced . at three months, then can travel three weeks later...
I imported a pup from Sweden and we thought 3 m was 12 weeks...but they wanted three calendar months and then we waited for the required 21 days after the rabies vacc...

Thanks Bellasophia, that was the website I looked at, but if you scroll down, puppies and kittens are allowed in without Rabies Vacc.

I just don't like the idea of such a long journey, how can the pup toilet when it can't be put down. It would have to stay in the crate all the time? I think I'll tell him no

Hi tda, just scrolled down, you are right about the UK,it does say no rabies for pup. ,sorry bout that
For italy we did need the rabies ,which has come about due to the flooding of illegal pups entering the country from the Eastern Europe regions .
if you have any doubts I would not let the pup go. In our case I contacted the breeder even before the pups were born.We emailed regularly and she sent me photos of the pup as he grew. We flew to denmark to collect the pup,and she drove from Sweden to deliver him to us at the Danish airport.
how does the man propose to take pup back? the planes will allow pup to travel as luggage in a Sherpa bag and he can toilet him at the airport on paper...I did this when I flew another dog from Austria..the pups are more relaxed than we are and often sleep most of the way.If there is a change of flights, pup can be taken out of bag when he is in the airport, but not whilst on the actual flight.
is he a breeder? is he going to show your dog..why does he want your lines...I'd want to know all about him before he took a puppy....and I don't even breed LOL

I have bought a puppy from Ireland and travelled over to collect her without seeing her in the flesh - however I was in regular contact with the breeder before the pups were born and were kept up to date by email and phone.

If you feel uncomfortable about it then don't do it, your litter, your pups and you have to feel good about their prospective homes.

With regards to travelling the puppy at a young age - that wouldn't bother me at all - we travelled from Northern Ireland to Cornwall with ours - hope you find them all super homes :)

My mum has exported dogs all over the world, so that wouldn't bother me - but I would be expecting someone to be in more regular contact rather than just turn up and take the pup away. It doesn't quite ring true to me (no substance or evidence to support that of course!) so unless he comes back with info like he is coming over for Crufts and that is why he is specific about the date I would personally avoid it.

I collected a pup from NI without seeing him before hand, I was in contact with breeder, had a deposit on him and breeder sent me video/pics until I collected at 16 weeks. I specifically wanted him as his father is the Irish field trial champion and his mother is a field trial champion also both with bloodlines I had looked for here.

No offence to OP but if the pups are only pet bred - so not show champions or top workers - why would anyone want to buy one from another country? I'm sure they are lovely, but it doesn't sound quite right to me.

Clodagh, no offence taken! They are pedigree, and from very good stock (related to show champions), but we don't show. I've only told him the names of the parents and haven't send the extended pedigrees
