Hello, just wondering what you all think makes a good advert?

How recent do you like photos to be? Would you rather see say year old photos of horse out competing/ hunting or more recent photos of it at home?

What would you like in a video again, older videos doing a variety of hunting/ showing/ odes etc or recent at home?

What key points do you like to see in the text? And what phrases would put you off?
Personally I hate those 'Mummy says I love hacking and carrots' type ones.

Where would you look first if you were buying? Local paper/ adhorse/ H&H/ horsemart/ horsequest etc

And last of all how long from advertising would you estimate it takes for the horse to sell and be in his new home?

Need to sell my much loved gelding by September to make way for heading off to uni ): In the time I have had him have had many comment on how lovely he is and how people will bite my hand off for him so hoping should be fairly straightforward? Never sold a horse before, hence all the Q's any advice much appreciated :)

honestly i prefer simple snappy point

-hacks alone
-done this
-done that
-boxes etc

then futher explanation at the bottom with good pictures of anything you have said they do like XC :-) a video is good to in walk, trot, canter popping a pole or two :-)

I'm looking at the moment: I prefer simple and to the point but honesty must be key. I guess some people lie but there are people out there who don't mind a bit of a cheeky attitude :) I too hate the ads as if the horse were talking- drives me mad.

With regards to pictures I would like to see a picture of everything. Say if the horse has done xc then I like to see a picture of xc and so on :)

I look everywhere... horse and hound, horsemart, horsequest, equine adverts, horse deals, horse and rider, preloved :) and I buy the magazines as well :')

I'd definitely put on there somewhere about genuine interest or something along those lines because I have had friends sell horses and the responses they got were amusing to say the least :)

This. Good photos and vids of what it can do but with a note of what fitness it is currently in.

I also like a name (not so necessary), height, gender, breed, price etc. So many ads say what it does but with no basic info.

I like NFED.

Last time I sold a horse it was about October time and I'd used a couple of pictures of her competing in the summer. Several buyers then commented that she didn't look like she did in the pictures because she'd gone a bit fluffy!

Apparently they hadn't realised horses grow winter coats...

I think that pictures should be less than a year old but its perfectly reasonable to show them competing and at their best. I'm looking for a friend at the moment and IMP standing knee deep in a field full of mud wearing a full neck rug does not show your horse to their best advantage.

:D:D:D

Also if it has any serious issues such as bucking dont put it right on the end, that does my nut in when people leave it

"fantasit once in in a life tim blah blah blah

bucks into canter
£900"

Just put it in and be honest or you will get a novice whinging in your ear a few months later

A good confirmation shot with no tack / rugs, then possibly 1 jumping and one that shows the eyes - always like to see a nice eye.
Keep description simple, what horse does / does not do.
Mention major issues in advert, saves wasted calls.

thanks for the replys :)

Another question- what would you expect to be included in 'comes with tack and rugs/ full wardrobe'?
I.E. Should I send him off with full wardrobe (HW/ MWx2/ LWx2 turnout then HW/MW stables, thermatex, fleeces x3 saddle and 2 bridles?) or just the basics and see if I could ebay the others?

For pictures a side on confirmation shot is good and one of it ridden. Don't use pictures with rugs on.
Something I saw recently which I thought was a good idea was a link to a you tube video which had a video of the horse doing all the riden things, walk, trot canter on both reins. A bit of jumping. The a bit of it riding on the roads, past a tractor, through water and loading. Thought that was a brilliant idea gives you a much better idea about the horse.

That sounds a nice way of doing it :)

Some thing I saw recently which I really liked was a really good (private) ad, and photos, but it was coupled with a video.
I watched him bought in from field, groomed, tacked up, mounting, riding & everything in-between & after.
The lady had cut it all together and it just worked really well!

^^ what they said about the videos showing a bit of everything, would be SO helpful (we are looking-ish now for daughter who is getting far too leggy on her New Forest). I do want to see photos of both sides of the horse, a jumping one a flatwork one and a tack and rugs off one pehaps, (quite why people think you want to see a photo of a rug with a horse under I don't know! )

I really DISLIKE videos with loads of loud popular music, I want to focus on the horse and see what it does (and being out of time to the muzak is not good), it's important to see it working on both reins, and a varity of other stuff, being groomed, tacked up and mounted, hunting or hacking in company etc all good stuff to know as well as loading, so if you can link to a video of all he does I'm sure you'll quickly get a good buyer.

I'd sell with the basics either included or as an optional extra (I think I'd always get a saddle checked anyway with a new horse and personally wouldn't worry about having to buy one but some people might) as I expect you'd get more for it all on ebay (if you can be faffed)

In terms of tack I expect a ridden horse to come with saddle, headcollar and would rather bridle too already included in price. I hate negotiating so would rather one price with tack and one price without rather than negotiation written on an add. Or clearly stated whether it does or not, the number of adds that don't let on. If been out of work/project etc I'd expect the horse with a headcollar.
If it requires rugging one of each grade or at least what is currently suitable would be nice of turnouts. I wouldn't be fussed about stable but I don't stable mine routinely.

I have never bought with tack... tack available by separate negotiation is a fair comment but If I was to send off my current horse with his saddles, bridles and all rugs, then I would be looking at nearly £3K to replace it. As you are looking to sell up I would mention it or ebay as things like thermatex make decent money on ebay.

You can sell with or without tack. Depends if you spent £KKK or not really.

Some people will want tack others happy to get their own. Whenever I have sold always went with their saddle particularly if I knew it was perfect fit(I do like most horses).

But I would not expect a long advert. Mine was bought off a very non descript ad in H&H. Minimal and there were long line of folks trying to view him. Mine was ie Family cob, allrounder. Good in all ways. Tel............! Price£.

I don't mind coming without but if not mentioned I expect, I'd always sell with tack as will be fitted to it. I've always bought ridden with tack, not ridden with nothing.
I still hate the term negotiation I want a rough figure upfront knowing what I'm getting.

For example a 3k horse may be in my budget with tack. A 3k horse with tack then negotiated at another 3k is a completely different price range. I don't like reading an advert and then having extra charges and problems thrown at me.

I prefer a figure without tack. I have loads and unless it has a special bit would rather have a price for just the horse. I like quality tack and don't want anyone elses tat....not that I am saying yours would be. If you are aiming at the first time horse owner then including tack means they can get it home, get on and go!!

I'd always sell with their saddle personally

It then reduces the chances of the buyer coming back to you with a problem because they have skinted themselves buying the horse and have skimped on a saddle and ended up with a badly fitting one

Its one less change for the horse when he moves

If there is a bridle to match then I'd include that and maybe one indoor and one outdoor rug then I would ebay the rest

consider selling in the spring as you may well get more money than if you keep the horse all summer for yourself to compete etc then trying to sell going in to winter

No stories or unnecessary words. If you must say sad sale that must be at the end. I cannot stand adverts over there > which start Sad sale of wonderful friend. I mean what does that tell you!! You want the title to include as much info as possible. Definitely the height and ability ie 13.2 BSJA school master or 16.2 TBx lightly backed or whatever but info that is useful not padding. :)

Also the area and not an obscure village no one will know, say what major town is near or even the first part of the postcode. And the price and what is included if anything.

I hate seeing POA- it usually makes me think I cant afford it, so lets no embarrass myself by trying!

I'd sell him with one saddle, bridle, one stable rug, 2 turnouts and headcollar. Sell the rest.

I like preloved, H&H, Ad Horse, Horse Exchange, it would be good to put a short desciprtion, then maybe something like 'more information on request.' Same with pictures, confo shot, jumping if approporiate and ridden- hate the ones where it is a head over the door, or stood in a muddy field with a rug on! Also have extra pics ready for those who show interest, possible you tube video is good too.
