Was just pondering about horses sold by dealers..... Why do people get a dealer to selll their horses? I always wonder that there must be something wrong either psychologically or physically that the owner hasnt been able to sell the horse themselves. Where do dealers get their horses from? I have been to see numerous horses being sold by dealers - some very reputable and some less so - and particularly for the less so, at the back of my mind I think they are telling me what I want to hear, will do anything for the sale as there is so much that can put to down to chance with selling horses i.e. bad behaviour shown up at new owners can be blamed ' on the new owner'. I worry about the lack of history and how much faith they put in a horse they have had for 2 weeks. I suppose private sellers can spin a pretty picture too as well. Horse buying is so fraught with problems, isnt it!!!

No particular reason for posting - just interested to hear from dealers as I am rather cynical, and from people who have sold a horse via a dealer.

I am not a dealer but do work as an agent for owners. I take horses into sell, most come because either the owners havent go the facilities and time to do the horse justice or for people to try them out, others do have small problems or quirks with their owners, normally a lot is down to personality clashes, riders not capable or confident enough, some people also cannot deal with showing lots of people their horse and prefer not too.

I make sure the buyers meet the owner, when serious about their horse. I tell the buyer my findings on the horse and how it has been since being here, I then leave the buyer and seller to negotiate everything else, money, why they are for sale etc etc.

On leaving here the buyer gets a full report off of me, as to how I have found the horse and they have behaved since being here, from what the horse is fed on to how they are to catch, ride etc etc just in case the seller has told slight untruths or exaggerated any points so they are totally sure on what they are buying. All buyers are strongly recommended by me to get a 5 stage vetting.

I have been lucky and to date have 100% satisfied customers on both sides, as even a horse with a quirk will find a home if you are totally honest.

I am selling my horse through a dealer as i am injured so i can't ride the horse for viewing myself, i don't have a friend who i trust to ride my horse. I dont have any trial faciallitys at home other than to hack the horse out alone - which she is fine to do but they will not be able to see her in a school or over jumps. And i do not want to deal with the time wasters either. I also believe that some dealers will match the horse to the right person, people oftern ask them to find them a certian type of horse so they kind of already have someone that maybe interested in the horse.

Dealers can oftern move horses on quickley too, so if you are looking for a quick sale due to whatever circumstances then it maybe worth a go.

I don't take part exchanges in or somebody else's troubles. I buy directly from breeders abroad, keep them for anywhere between 6 months and 2 years unless exceptional circumstances. I don't spin a story to sell, I don't need to, the reason is simple, it has been bought to sell on, I try to make money on it (try being the operative word).
