Hi,

Can anyone recommend where to get some semi permanent electric fencing? By this I mean wooden posts with electric tape. I've had a look online, including the place I bought my electric fencing kit from, but everywhere only seems to sell plastic posts.

This is the kind of thing I'm after-

I know my local saddlery sells Rutland stuff, but I've never seen wooden posts there and it would be much more convenient if I could just order online.

Thanks

Wooden posts I would have thought would need to be sourced from local wood yard - try Paddock Perfection they may do them

We have a Rutland Energiser now after a Gallagher and it is much better quality - Gallagher had to be soldered after 6 months and died after 18

Electric Rope is stronger & better than electric tape if your looking for something longer term

Please be very careful with electric rope, it has a stupidly high breaking strain and I have seen it cause fatal injuries on a horse, they never tell you that! Far better to repair a break than have a seriously injured.

I buy my wooden posts from a local supplier and bang them in or you can get a contractor to bang them in for you. Mine are placed about 6 paces apart.

Look on Ebay for your tape, but tape can be poor in windy conditions when the thin filaments break. I run electric wire behind the 20mm tape 1.5mm or less is good and very cheap, I have used this system for 20 years without an injury. This gives me the visual from the tape and conductivity from the wire.

I buy the screw in insulators, they are best as you can move them very easily especially if you need to bang a post back in.

I buy a lot of my stuff and my fencers from Rappa Fencing who do internet order dispached by post, they do some powerful machines that run on Mains or 12v if you have a power cut.

I bought my wooden fence stakes from my local agricultural merchants - they cost about £1.40 each, we already had a post driver so banged them all in oursleves (it was a two person job)
I bought my tape and insulators from the same place although I think you can get quite a good deal on ebay etc if you look around.

If you want any tips please feel free to ask, as we ( me and my stepdad) did all my paddocks without any outside assistance

We swapped tape for rope as in a windy area and the tape kept stretching - the rope we bought has a lesser breaking strain than the tape we had but I can tell you now it bleedin well hurts still!

One of our fillies burst through the gateway on sunday night when I was stood with the other filly the other side of the gate, the scared one bolted around me and the held filly and galloped up the field dragging the posts out behind her, took me out completely by the knees, held filly bolted and - luckily - did not get tangled other than across her chest, I got dragged until she cleared the rop (it snapped!), the backs of my knees are now agony and a delightful array of bruise and burn and I have a wrenched shoulder.

Luckily both fillies were perfectly ok and not a mark on them and allowed themselves to be caught and stabled without question
