Good news! World Horse Welfare have just announced
​
Almost 100 years after our founder, Ada Cole, stood on the docks and witnessed the cruel and brutal treatment of work weary horses being exported from British shores to slaughter abroad, this trade will finally be made illegal.

The Animal Welfare (Livestock Exports) Bill, which will ban the live export of horses and other livestock for slaughter and fattening from Great Britain, has reached the end of its parliamentary journey and now just needs Royal Assent before it is passed into law.

This is a monumental victory for animal welfare, after nearly a century of campaigning.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our supporters who have campaigned alongside us. Without you, we would not be celebrating this historic milestone.​

All the time people are breeding horses because they want to ride, drive or eat horses, they will be being sent to slaughter. That’s undoubted. But now they won’t have to stand in a truck with no food, water or care for several days as they’re shipped across the English Channel to that end.

Animal welfare gets very few wins - can we celebrate the victory, just for a moment?

About time too and it says it covers all animals so sheep and cattle won’t be subjected to the journeys as well. I can remember when I was about 12 which would have been 1958 I saw horrific pictures on the front of the paper with horses collapsed on the docks and waiting to be put on board a ship. Those pictures haunted me for ages even though I didn’t really know what was going on . Let’s hope nothing stops it happening 🤞

Wouldn't that be wonderful, unfortunately NZ also sends livestock overseas, mostly to China on the pretext that they are for breeding, ie our best dairy stock. It is disgusting, also sheep go to South America. I once saw a photo of a dairy farm in China, it was like a factory, I don't think the cows get outside at all. I don't think they send send sheep to the middle east like Australia do, those sheep are treated horrendously at the other end, sometimes I think the lucky ones are the ones don't survive the voyage. I don't know how some people can sleep at night.

I support a charity in the US which tries to help Amish work horses being sent to slaughter in Canada & Mexico. Like one of the posters above said we can't stop them being slaughtered but at least we can stop the inhumane travel to the slaughterhouse.

Good for you- I watch lots of YouTubes about those poor horses. I’m sure there are Amish who care for their horses but I wish there were a lot more.

You could well be right, sadly.
Though at the moment we have Irish horse being shipped over here to be slaughtered, so I'm not sure how economically viable that is.
What we really need instead is some new abattoirs and better systems for signing horses out of the food chain for a defined period of time rather than forever. I wish the welfare companies were focused on solutions rather than just bans which force alternative, less pleasant solutions.

Look at the US banning horse slaughter- that has created a far bigger, far worse problem 😕

Yes, I remember those horrific pictures too. I would have been 10 and it really upset me.
 
Great news! It’s wonderful that it’s happened but has taken so very long. Well done WHW for keeping up the fight.
Unfortunately, a long way to go until all animals have the respect and care they deserve. I find the animal cruelty
/ neglect adverts so hard to watch but I know we need to keep raising awareness nd funds.
