Sending PTS horse to zoo?

We were talking about what we would do if we had to have our horse PTS for some reason.

Several people said cremation, and several said knackerman but they were all surprised by what i wanted.

I stated that if Chico ever had to be euthanised my wish would be that he would be sent to a zoo or wildlife park.

I like the idea that using his meat to feed 'wild' animals would sort of put him back in to nature - a bit like the circle of life - and that the essence of him would live on in a way through the animals that ate him. He would be useful in his death, helping something else survive and thrive.

The others at the yard thought it was really wierd that i wanted him to be eaten, but to me it seems a very natural thing to happen.

What are your thoughts on it?
 
I expect most drugs would rule a horse out of that option - wormers/bute/vaccs etc - although I am happy to be proved wrong.

I don't think you are weird but it's not something I would choose for any of mine.
 
It's no different to them going to the hunt where they are usually used as dog (or should that be Hound!) food.

We have had two elderly loan ponies PTS in the past, one went to the hunt, one went to the Zoo, as requested by their owners.

I would like to hope that when mine go they can be cremated or buried but obviously a lot will depend on the circumstances of their death.
 
Everyone's views are different at the end of the day your horse your decision, whether you want to send him to hunt- zoo- cremated- buried what ever no right and wrong.

I couldn't send mine there mine( for reasons I cannot say ) are being cremated my will their ashes will be put with mine , I like knowing their casket is in loft like their waiting for me and when I die we will be put in ground as one but that's me . you do what you feel is right . :)

Feed endangered tigers, definitely. But make it a breeding zoo, not a show zoo. And not white tigers, they are a horrible genetic man-made mutation that results in many deformed cubs with cleft palate problems that have to be killed. Zoos breed them for the publicity, but it's a welfare nightmare.
 
I'm sure for the horse to be used as meat, hunts, zoo etc. It would need to be destroyed without drugs.
I.e shot.
Also the treatment before death could rule this out too.
 
My mare died of colic on the friday night of the queens jubilee weekend in 2001. I was so up set about losing her that when the vet hospital ( where she died ) suggested the zoo I was fine with it as tbh it meant I didn't have to worry about it. I don't have my own land so wouldn't have had anywhere to bury her. My boyfriend at the time who was non horsey but used to be a game keeper also thought it was a good idea. And he did stand up for me when other horsey people stared at me in dis belief over what I had done.

At the end of the day when they are gone, they're gone you can't hug a corpse. So if you are ok with it then do it .

If they died in the wild something would be along soon enough to eat them anyway.
 
My last horse was sedated then shot at home and he was taken to the zoo as I thought that this was the most natural way of things and in a way he would go on giving life to other animals and be the most environmentally friendly. They won't take them with a lethal injection though as the drug is different from a sedation.

However I don't feel the same way about my current horse I don't know why but at the moment I feel I would want him cremated and have his ashes back.
 
What an unusual idea. Never thought of that before. No personally I would want my horse cremated (with other fallen stock) and not have his ashes. But that's just me and each to their own. Wouldn't knock you for it and as Sussexbythesea has shown by his/her post it looks like they have already done this. x
