Sending unwanted horses to slaughter

The use of slaughter houses for horses is an essential part of the industry and horse economics, that I accept.

However, sending a loved pet or competition horse to slaughter instead of spending a bit of money and PTS at home does not sit comfortably with me at all I'm afraid.

this.

not all horses are pets........and i dont have an issue with slaughter as long as its done humanely

but i do have an issue with people sending their much loved pets as they cant do the right thing by them etc...but in a ways its better than selling them to somewhere unsuitable.

id always have mine pts at home - even if it costs me money i dont really have,

I dont have and Issue with it ( dont like the thought of it)

My boy any of are lot (furture horse's) for a fact will be with me until there time come's and they will be PTS and Creamated.....

i havnt read the whole thread yet but i want to reply tell you that i had a beautiful 17hh ex racehorse for 2 years..but he was very ill for the last year .ispent alot of money keeping him sound and then he fell apart,he couldnt even stand up prperly , so i decided he would have to be put down....i had a choice!!i was offered 400 to take him away??but i decided to pay300 for him to be taken by my local hunt and to be sure he was shot on the spot!.that sounds awful, but i saw it done and dusted
at least i knowb he is gone,,,,i could have had a few pound for him,,but no way

On my post I didnt mean they knew where they were going on the trasport etc

I meant once they get through the doors of the slaughter house :(

once they get through the doors it all happens rather quickly, and i doubt a slaughterman smells any different to a huntsman.

Each to their own , as long as the horse or pony is treated with respect by whoever does the deed then there is no right or wrong method, just personal preference:)

I'd prefer it if more people did it rather than send their old and decrepit horses to the sales where they could end up much worse off.
I wish more people had the balls to do the decent thing themselves rather than pass the problem and the old horses on.
Saying that, we have Turners close by but I'll never send one of mine, they are always done at home by our local hunt or knackerman with me holding them.

Agree ibblebibble I've personally never sent a horse, but have gone with a lot of livestock. They are very accommodating and rather than them taking the animals they allow us to walk the animals right up until the last point (on our request).

I'd be far more concerned about the conditions most livestock is kept in before they meet the slaughterhouse... But that's another thread...

I too will put to sleep when my boys time comes. I think a horse that has served its owner well deserves a peaceful death (shot at home or PTS at home) rather than transported in a very stressful journey to an unknown place where it can smell blood and fear.

JMO.

You have clearly never been, as this is a load of old tosh and nothing like the reality.

Absolutely - there are far worse fates than this.
When the time comes for MJ, I will have him pts at home, but I have no problems with others sending a horse to slaughter.

Now, live export I do have a huge issue with, and as someone said, if we had a market for horsemeat in the UK, it would save alot of animals a lot of pain and fear.
