I'm having a crisis of confidence and for one reason and another I'm worried I'm not up to scrathch to teach my 5yo ex racer and bring him up to normal riding standard. I know I could do it and I've asked a few friends in the know to help me but because I'm constantly being told how hard it is to retrain an ex racer compared to a 'baby' I'm getting myself in knots!!

I've spoken to a friend of mine who suggested sending him away to someone more experienced to train but I'm worried that it's not only be a cop out on my part but it might mean I cause more probs than i repair!!

Any suggestions v v welcome

Mine's going to bootcamp on Monday because I do not have the time because of work nor the facilities to school him. I bred him to be a top class all rounder for me and at the moment he is a field ornament.

Personally I don’t think there is anything wrong with sending your horse away for a bit of extra education. I just think it’s about finding the right person to suit the horse, and also the right person that suits how you ride. Would also be great if the person who schools your horse could also give you lessons on your horse maybe? I don’t think it’s a cop out at all, it’s just doing what you feel is best.

I sent my Cob on schooling livery when I went on holiday last year, it definitely did him good.

It's definitely not a cop out if it's for the good of the horse.

In my experience ex-racers are generally easier to train than normal young horses but they can take a long time. Do you have a good instrcutor on hand?

Its the best thing I ever did with mine. I was scared of him, he was tense and it was all a vicious circle and I didn't know what to do. I was scared to even ride him after he bucked me off and ten days after him going away I was riding him on my own on Friday with confidence. There is a way to go yet but he is 100% better in such a short time its unbelievable I just wish I had done it allot sooner rather than getting myself in such a knot about it all. I will still finish bringing him on but we are both in a position now where we have a good grounding to build on and both have some more confidence.

When I think of the livery I paid for the weeks I didn't ride him the extra money of the schooling is a no brainer, of course you need the right person but I would go for it!

i have a couple- my old RI and a friend have offered to help me but i'm just wodering if he's be better with someone with more exp to bring on a bit esp cuz due to the weather and varius injuries i've not been able to do much schooling lately.
