Sending your horse to a riding school.

I would consider it if I knew the school and could trust them to care for my horse properly. My issue would be dealing with the fact that lots of people were riding him! - even if they were all fantastic riders I'd probably still get jealous!

Some horses thrive in a RS environment. Lady at my yard put her horse on working livery at a local school when she started having babies ... the horse went from being stuffy & crooked to forward, round and a great little jumper - and lost weight & looked much better for it.

So, depends on the horse, depends on the school .. but I wouldnt dismiss it out of hand.

I had this dilema last year.
After a riding accident a few years ago in which i snapped my collar bone, it never healled properly so the docs decided to put a metal plate in it.

They said i wouldnt be able to ride for 3 months!

I thought oh no what am i going to do. I didnt want my horse to do nothing but was worried about loaning him or sending him to a riding school.

I wouldnt be able to even muck out!

Then a friend saw an advert in an equestrian paper, It was a well known college wanting loan horses.

So Perry, My lovley horse spent three months there.
As hard as it was, it was the best thing i could have done for him for those three months.

Hartpury college in Gloucester looked after him very well.
As it is an equestrian college not a riding school i new it would be run differently, just better than a riding school with more experienced people riding him.
Not as you say inexperianced people making him pick up bad habits!
People who are actually at college to learn about horses!

I would be more coutious of sending one of my horses to a riding school,I wouldnt totally rule it out, but i wouldnt think twice about sending them to hartputy or another well know, well run college.

First of all not all equestrian colleges are run better than all riding schools.
Secondly, you say that 'more experienced people will be riding' but then say that they are at college to learn about horses. How does that work? And can I say, yet again, that not all riding school clients are 'numpties', some are experienced riders and are actually capable of doing more than bouncing around on a horse while jabbing it in the mouth.

Having seen some of the students at a well known equine college and having seen some of the other clients at the riding school I ride at I know which I would rather have riding any horse of mine (if I had one).

hate to do it again but ditto SF- having watched on many occasions some of the students from my nearest equestrian college - I've seen far better RS clients.

Never. My horse was used in a RS before I got him (bought him from my old riding instructor, they'd used him a bit in th RS but the only thing he could safely be used for was hacking out in groups) and he hated it.

He likes consistency, in terms of who handles him, likes his routine, even down to having his feet picked out in the right order! He needs consistency of just one rider really, or maybe two that he knows really well. He will have someone else on but in the longer term, he needs just one person TBH as he just gets upset if they're asking different things.

Would never ever send him to a RS. Would rather give him the time off if I couldn't ride (gave him 2 months off last summer while I was working away, then paid a friend who's an AI to school him twice a week and hack once to get him going again for the next month).

Thanks everyone, I would never do it, more to do with the people allowed to ride my horses rather than how they were looked after. The yard were having a conversation about it the other day and I thought it would be interesting to hear what others had to say.
