Well, my boy doesn't think he's 'senior', and nor do I...but it seems that at the ripe old age of 8, that is what he is now classed as (I haven't told him for fear of offending!).

Therefore, his insurance has now been bumped up £3/month. From the research I have done I can see that the £18/month I will now be paying is quite a good price. He is covered for vets fees up to £5000, lost/stolen etc. I know some companies are cheaper but then only offer accident vet fees and even then you have to pay 35% of it!!!

What companies can people recommend for senior (whisper it) dog insurance?

I recently caneclled mine as renewal had gone up to £75 a month 100 excess and me having to pay 25% of each claim.
As my dog is 13 I would not put him through major treatment so decided not to continue the insurance as I would need a bill of about £1000 before I cameout on top.

Is that 5k per year rather than condition as doesn't seem bad. £3 p/m rise seems normal, many people have been hit with high premium rises lately. Consider what's on your vet records as will all go down as pre-existing, if you decide to change. I insured my new oldie (7) with petplan its too late to move my other 2 (6&8) due to minor problems that could be expensive, the heart murmur would probably equate to all heart issues.

I insured m

None of mine are insured regardless of age - with 4 of them, the annual premiums would far outweigh the vets bills they incur. Although Islay (aged 10) is trying her best to reverse that situation at the moment, and is racking up vets bills as quickly as she can it seems :O

Thanks for the replies :)

The vet's bills cover is £5k/year, which I am happy with. So, far he has only had 1 treatment all his life and that was to remove a grass seed from deep inside his ear. I'm half -tempted not to insure but realistically couldn't afford a big vet's bill....so there's my answer ;).

And yes, premiums go up year on year (regardless of whether you have claimed or not), whereas the cover they offer goes down!

I don't insure my dogs. 3 staffords would cost me more to insure than my retired mare, trailer and would be eventer. What I have done is subscribe to my vets VIP plan and pay £35 a month for all 3. This covers their boosters, wormers and flea treatment, 10% discount on prescription food and pills plus, if I rack up a large bill for an operation, I can pay it off over 10 months so I do have peace of mind. They are now offering 3rd party insurance as well which I will take as well. Perhaps you could ask your vet about such a plan? Happy to give you my vets details if you wanted to see how they manage it.

Oh wow, that sounds interesting! Will do a bit of research and see if my vet, or any other nearby, offer such a plan. Thanks for that :).
